A Michigan City man has been charged with OWI causing death and reckless homicide after a March crash. On March 12, just before 3:30 PM, deputies were dispatched to a personal injury crash at US 35 and Nicomas Path,. The initial investigation determined 24 year old Eric A. Adair of Michigan City was operating a passenger vehicle traveling northwest on US 35. Adair’s vehicle drove left of center, into the southbound lane and crashed head-on with another passenger vehicle. That vehicle was being operated by 32 year old Nathan Blount of La Porte. The public is invited to blood drives scheduled from 7AM to 1PM on Tuesday, June 15, and 1 to 7PM on Wednesday, June 16, at Franciscan Health Michigan City. The blood drive will be held on Versiti’s Mobile Blood Bus outside the entrance of the hospital at 3500 Franciscan Way. Donors must bring identification. The LaPorte County Convention and Visitors Bureau will host a kickoff celebration of Naomi Bowman Talbert Anderson, noted 19th century African American suffragist, civil rights activist and writer. Born in 1843 and raised in Michigan City, she was known as a dynamic speaker, appearing with founders of the women’s suffragist movement, resulting in the 19th Amendment, giving women the right to vote. As Independence Day approaches, City of La Porte Fire Chief Andy Snyder is reminding residents to be mindful of the city's fireworks code. The City of La Porte's municipal code states that consumer fireworks may be discharged within the city limits on the following dates and times: June 28 through July 3, 5 to 11 p.m.; July 4, 10 a.m. to midnight; and July 5 through July 9, 5 to 11 p.m. Snyder said violators could be penalized with a fine of up to $300.

Women struggled to formally serve their country in the American Revolutionary War. They were forbidden to serve, but did so against the law. The Department of Natural Resources, the Town of Burns Harbor and the City of Portage announced the opening of a newly completed segment of the Marquette Greenway in Burns Harbor. An upcoming Portage project will extend the trail west through a portion of Indiana Dunes National Park. The 1.5-mile asphalt multi-use trail in Burns Harbor was made possible with funding from a Next Level Trails (NLT) grant, covering approximately 70 percent of the total cost.
