Michiana Humane Society will have Volunteer Day this Saturday. “Enrichment items make our pets' lives so much better at MHS! The Salvation Army Michigan City Corps and Community Center on Wednesday held their Red Kettle Wrap-Up at McDonald’s. Alongside their 2025 Christmas Campaign Chair, La Porte County Sheriff Ron Heeg, they announced that 92% of their countywide $450,000 goal has been raised. The Salvation Army says there’s still time to help us cross the finish line. "You can continue to contribute to the 2025 Christmas Campaign through the end of January, and every dollar makes a difference for our neighbors in need, the Salvation Army said on their Facebook. Valpo Parks announced on their Facebook page that another 25 acres were restored to native prairie this January, doubling the 25 acres completed last year. "These rolling prairie areas support wildlife, pollinators, and long-term park sustainability," Valpo Parks stated. "This project was completed with the US Department of Fish and Wildlife (USFW), with guidance from biologist Jared O’Brien and support from our horticulture team. Park staff will maintain and steward the prairie as it matures." Valpo Parks has posted a link to a reel that shows the difference these restorations make on their Facebook page.

News Release, Indiana DNR: The annual Indiana Department of Natural Resources (DNR) Division of Historic Preservation & Archaeology (DHPA) photo contest has started, and the deadline for entering is Friday, April 3. Open to photographers of any age and skill level, the contest has been held since 2005 to promote Indiana’s historic resources. All structures in photo entries must be at least 50 years old and in Indiana but don’t have to be fully restored. Photos of exclusively natural elements will not be accepted. A Lake County, Indiana Sheriff’s Department police officer is in the hospital after a head-on collision during a police pursuit Wednesday, according to the Lake County Sheriff's Department.  Two people in the suspect’s vehicle were also hospitalized. According to police, the pursuit began sometime after 6 p.m. and the suspect’s vehicle was headed northbound at a high rate of speed. At 9th Avenue, the vehicle struck an officer’s patrol vehicle head on. The Lake County Sheriff's Department says the officer is being treated for multiple cuts, and other injuries and is expected to recover. The driver was placed in custody

DRUG DEALERS CONVICTED AND SENTENCED On January 2, 2026, Michael Blassingame and Alexander Lopez were sentenced in Laporte Circuit Court for drug dealing crimes. Mr. Lopez was originally charged in 2025 with a Level 3 Felony for Dealing a Narcotic Drug. Mr. Blassingame was charged in 2023 for a Level 2 Felony for Dealing in Meth. Both cases were investigated by the Laporte County Drug Task Force (DTF). Both men entered into plea agreements with the State of Indiana. Mr. Lopez pled Guilty to the lesser charge of Level 4 Dealing in Cocaine/Narcotic Drug, in exchange for a sentence cap
