The La Porte County Sheriff's Office on Wednesday announced the subject of Tuesday night’s search in Hudson Township was taken into custody at the 61 mile marker of I-80/90. The LCSO said further details will be provided when they become available for release.
The Porter County Emergency Management Agency released the following statement Tuesday afternoon regarding a hazmat incident for a chemical spill in Valparaiso: HAZMAT INCIDENT: At approximately 1:37 pm Porter County Hazmat received a report of a possible chemical spill on Enterprise Drive in Valparaiso. Upon arrival, it was determined that a chemical storage tank of sodium hydroxide, operated by Shoremet had been inadvertently overfilled. Valparaiso Fire Department, Valparaiso Police Department, Valparaiso Water Department and IDEM also responded. The La Porte County Sheriff's Office said in a statement earlier this week that citizens are again being targeted by scammers purporting to be either current or retired employees of the La Porte County Sheriff's Office. "All UNEXPECTED telephone calls from anyone claiming to be affiliated with the agency should immediately be terminated," the LCSO said.

A 26-year-old Dyer man was hit by a car late Sunday night and died from his injuries, the Lake County Sheriff’s Office announced. Just after 11:00 p.m. Lake County Sheriff’s Department police officers were dispatched to the scene of the crash in the 9900 block of Sheffield Avenue in unincorporated Dyer. A preliminary investigation revealed a driver was traveling northbound when the car struck something in the roadway. Initially, the driver believed a deer may have been struck. On Sunday, (9/21) at 8:09 AM, deputies responded to the 200 block of Lakeview Drive in Fish Lake regarding a burglary in progress resulting in one person being shot. The initial on- scene investigation completed by Deputy David Francis and assisting deputies determined the following occurred. A 66-year-old homeowner arrived at his residence and entered through an overhead garage door. He encountered a Hispanic male carrying two rifles inside his garage. On Sunday (9/21) at 3:36 AM, Deputy Austin Wells was standing on a sidewalk near the intersection of Lincolnway and Monroe Street. He observed a vehicle traveling west on Lincolnway in excess of the posted speed limit (25 MPH). Deputy Wells estimated the vehicle to be traveling approximately 50 miles per hour and sounding as if it had a flat tire. Wednesday, Sept. 24, is the deadline to apply for the Duneland School Corporation’s free-or-reduced-price meal program, funded through the U.S. Department of Agriculture, according to the Town of Chesterton Facebook page. DSC will process benefit applications for those students who apply and are approved. Students not qualifying for free or reduced-price meals will be charged the paid meal price for breakfast and/or lunch. Families who were receiving benefits last school year and have not yet reapplied for the 2025-26 school year are encouraged to complete the application, as the carryover benefits for these families will expire on Wednesday, Sept. 24.
