On Aug. 21, an AED was installed at Fairgrounds Park in Valparaiso near the concession stand (Old Fairgrounds). Indiana Dunes National Park has announced that the superintendent has closed a portion of the Marquette Trail due to ongoing construction on the trail. Indiana Dunes National Park says this closure is necessary for the maintenance of public health and safety. The closure of the Marquette Trail from North Grand Boulevard going east to North County Line Road remains in effect through December 31st, 2025, or until further notice. A stormwater project involving piping and ditch work on North/South Bailey Drive begins today, Sept. 4, the Town of Porter is reporting. Crews are working from north to south, commencing on North Bailey Drive and continuing to the intersection of South Bailey Drive and Fleming Street; then moving south on Fleming Street to Ballard Avenue, then west on Ballard Avenue to Waverly Road. In the last phase of the project, the stormwater sewer will cross Waverly Road east to west, at which time Waverly Road will be closed. On September 3, 2025, at approximately 4:48am, the LaPorte County E-911 Regional Dispatch Center received a 911 call advising a man had been shot at a residence in the 1300 block of Franklin Street. Multiple Officers from Uniform Patrol Shift III responded to the scene as did the Michigan City Fire Department and LaPorte County Emergency Medical Services. The first responding units arrived on scene and found twenty-five-year-old Michigan City resident, Jacob Addison, inside. Mr. Addison had been shot and critically injured. In the Town of Porter, Carlson Corners will be closed to through-traffic for a stormwater project, beginning on Thursday, Sept. 4, the Town of Chesterton announced. The three residents on Carlson Corners will have access to their homes during construction. Sewer pipe will be installed on the south side of Carlson Corners from Mineral Springs Road to the Peterson Ditch on Pearson Road. “This will require complete daily closures of Carlson Corners while the project is underway,” the Town of Porter said. Just after 6 o’clock on Monday, September 1, 2025 Liberty Township firefighters were sent to Long Lake in lower Liberty Township for a missing male subject on the lake. Chiefs Brian Duncan and Michael Wineland arrived on scene and started investigating to gather information to assist water rescuers in being able to locate the subject quickly. The male subject was reported last seen approximately 100 feet off the West shoreline, just out from the lily pads that hugged the shore. Porter County Dive Team members quickly deployed a rescue boat and rescuers in the water in search of the man.
