South Shore Line: Eastern half of Hammond Station platform to close

The South Shore Line is advising passengers that platform work in conjunction with the West Lake Corridor Project will be ongoing at Hammond Station and will impact platform availability, effective Friday, March 15, 2024. Beginning March 15, the eastern half of the Hammond platform will be closed. Passengers must enter/exit the Hammond platform via the west entrance only. Train service will operate as regularly scheduled from the west end of the platform. This construction is an element of the eventual demolition of Hammond Station in anticipation of the transition to the new Hammond Gateway Station (located at 4530 Sheffield Ave.)

Chesterton Fire Department announces participation in Home Fire Campaign

The Chesterton Fire Department has announced its participation in the Home Fire Campaign launched by the American Red Cross, which aims to prevent fire-related deaths and injuries. The Home Fire Campaign consists of the installation of 10-year life lithium battery smoke alarms and providing residents with home fire safety information, including how to create an escape plan. City of Valparaiso to host blood drive with American Red Cross

The City of Valparaiso will host a blood drive with the American Red Cross on Friday, April 5, 2024 at Valparaiso City Hall, 10 am to 4:00 p.m. To schedule your appointment, visit redcrossblood.org. According to the Red Cross, donors with all blood types are needed, especially those with types O negative, A negative and B negative. Blood is a perishable product that can only come from volunteer blood donors.

Card skimming device found at South Haven business

The Porter County Sheriff’s Office says a skimming device was located at the South Haven Save-A-Lot. Police say if you used your debit or credit card at this business between the dates of Feb. 9 to Feb. 27 they would recommend you cancel that card and get a new one immediately. Anyone with information in reference to this case, are asked to submit a tip via the Porter County Sheriff’s Office website or app.

Ramp closures planned at I-65 and Ridge Road

In Lake County, there will be ramp closures at Ridge Road for fiber optic work beginning on or after Wednesday, March 20. The ramp to Ridge Road from the I-94 eastbound to I-65 southbound off-ramp will be closed. Traffic from eastbound I-94 will still be able to exit to I-65 southbound. The ramp from I-65 southbound to Ridge Road will also be closed. These closures will be in place on or after March 20 through early April. Update: Motorist detained for questioning in fatal road rage shooting released from custody

The motorist detained for questioning in the fatal road rage shooting on I-80/94 early Wednesday morning, March 6, has been released from custody, the Indiana State Police is reporting. I-65 to have lane, ramp closures for concrete work

An INDOT contractor will have lane and ramp closures on I-65 near U.S. 30 beginning next week to finish concrete restoration work that began in 2023 between U.S. 231 and U.S. 30. On or after Monday, March 18, I-65 will be reduced to two lanes shifted to the left in each direction between 61st Avenue and 109th Avenue. State Road 2 to close between U.S. 41 and the state line in Lake County

An INDOT contractor will close State Road 2 between Calumet Avenue and Stateline Road on or after Monday, March 18. State Road 2 will be closed through late June for a bridge replacement project over West Creek ditch. Motorists should seek an alternate route. Update: Valparaiso shooting victim dies, one person in custody

The victim of a shooting in Valparaiso has died and an arrested person has been identified, according to police. A report of multiple gunshots occurring in the 350 block of Locust Street occurred on Friday at about 3:50 p.m.  The shooting resulted in the death of 29-year-old Jessica Kouba of Valparaiso.  The second subject who was located on scene at the time of the incident has been identified as 25-year-old Anthony Lee of Merrillville.  Lee was taken into custody and transported to the Valparaiso Police Department as part of the investigation.  He has since been incarcerated on unrelated charges (possession

Officers shot at by a barricaded person in Michigan City

The Michigan City Police Department says its officers were shot at by a barricaded juvenile on Saturday night. Just after 8:30 p.m. officers received a notification from the city’s Flock Safety Raven gunshot detection system that multiple gunshots were fired in the 1600 block of Tennessee Street. Phone scammers portraying themselves as Indiana State Police

The Indiana State Police (ISP) says it has received several concerns from citizens reporting an apparent phone scam.  ISP says it receives numerous reports of phone scams each year, but this particular scam, they say, involves using the ISP General Headquarters phone number. Police say the scammer is using a Caller ID showing “Indiana State Police” with “317-232-8248”.  The scammer then identifies him/herself as an Indiana State Police Trooper and tells them their identity has been compromised or stolen.  The scammer then asks for personal information to “verify” that the person they are speaking to is actually one in the
