Valparaiso Community Schools are offering the Holiday Assistance Program again this year to help supplement holiday gifts for families in need. For those who are experiencing financial need and would like to be considered for this assistance, complete the form for each child you would like to be considered. This program is open to children living in your home who attend Valparaiso Community Schools, in grades K-12, as well as any children who are not yet school-age. Indiana State Police Participating in the National DEA Drug Takeback Day October 23

The DEA is sponsoring the 21st nationwide “Prescription Drug Take Back” On Saturday, Oct. 23. The initiative seeks to prevent prescription drug abuse and theft through the proper disposal of prescription drugs. Collection sites will be set up nationwide for expired, unused, and unwanted prescription drugs which will be properly disposed of without threat to the environment.  The program is for liquid and pill medications.  Vaping pens without batteries and vaping cartridges will also be taken.  Needles, new or used, will not be accepted for disposal.  The service is free and anonymous with no questions asked. Save the Dunes: US Steel incident under investigation by Indiana Department of Environmental Management and Environmental Protection Agency

According to Save the Dunes, IDEM said Friday morning that the US Steel incident is under investigation by both IDEM and the EPA to determine the cause as well as corrective actions needed to prevent future discharges. IDEM has set up a web page with updates on their response, including an option to sign up for a notification as soon as more information is posted.

Dermody represents City of La Porte at mayors’ conference

La Porte Mayor Tom Dermody joined other elected officials throughout the State of Indiana this week at the AIM Ideas Summit in French Lick. More motorists in excess of 100 mph stopped on State Road 2

The La Porte County Sheriff’s Office says two more motorists were stopped for going over 100 mph on State Road 2. This past Thursday afternoon, a deputy observed two passenger vehicles traveling westbound on SR 2 in the area of CR 400 East at a high rate of speed.The vehicles were traveling side by side – one in the driving lane and the other in the passing lane. The deputy’s radar unit measured the speed of the vehicles at 104 mph. A traffic stop was initiated in the 2800 east block of SR 2 on the two vehicles. The drivers

Update: Indiana State Police say the Silver Alert for Linda Wilde has been canceled.   Original: The Starke County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the disappearance of Linda Wilde, a 74 year old white female, 5 feet 9 inches tall, 180 pounds, gray hair with brown eyes, last seen wearing a yellow or orange T-shirt with faded blue jeans and eyeglasses. Mishawaka Police announced that both girls who were missing have been located. Police said on Thursday that Lilli Davis was located in South Bend Thursday morning. Ashley Taulbee was also located in Noble County Thursday night.

2021 Alzheimer’s Association Walk To End Alzheimer’s taking place in Michigan City on Saturday

Michigan City residents will join the fight to end Alzheimer’s disease at the Alzheimer’s Association Walk to End Alzheimer’s on Oct. 9.  On walk day, participants honor those affected by Alzheimer’s with the Promise Garden ceremony. The colors of the Promise Garden flowers represent people’s connection to Alzheimer’s and their personal reasons to end the disease. Franciscan Health Michigan City’s Center of Hope will further its mission to provide trauma care to survivors of abuse, thanks to a $10,000 grant from CAPTRUST Community Foundation. Waters of National Park’s Portage Lakefront closed

The National Park Service has temporarily closed the waters of Portage Lakefront in Indiana Dunes National Park due to the sighting of an “oily sheen” in the waters Thursday. The National Park Service said on Thursday that an investigation is under way to determine the nature and extent of the discharge. Indiana Department of Environmental Management (IDEM) is the lead agency on this incident. Questions on local drinking water quality should be referred to the individual water provider. Information on closures within Indiana Dunes National Park should be directed to the national park’s information desk line at 219-395-1882.

Indiana State Department of Health COVID county advisory levels updated

The Indiana State Department of health updated their weekly COVID county advisory level map on Wednesday. LaPorte County has moved down from a score of 2 with an orange level to a score of 1.5 with a yellow level. Porter County has moved down from a score of 2.5 with an orange level to a score of 1.5 with a yellow level . Lake County remains at a score of 1.5 with a yellow level. Michigan City Police Depart release photo of attempted robbery suspect

Michigan City Police have released pictures of the suspect involved in the attempted robbery of Members Advantage Credit Union, which occurred Sept. 29, at around 1:50 p.m. Preliminary investigation indicated that the suspect entered the bank and requested money. Police say the suspect left prior to obtaining any currency from employees. Officers determined that the suspect had fled north on foot towards St. John Road. The Porter County Sheriff’s Department says it has again been receiving reports that citizens have been getting telephone calls in which people were fraudulently claiming to be Law Enforcement Officials recently. Sometimes callers can mask the caller ID information to make it appear as if the call is coming from a police department or other government entity, police say.
