Hammond Police are looking to identify a suspect in a motel robbery. On Nov. 5, a robbery occurred at the Motel 6, in Hammond. Hammond Police are attempting to identify a male suspect shown on their Facebook page. ST. JOSEPH COUNTY, Ind. – The St. Joseph County Prosecutor’s Office says after reviewing the circumstances and evidence in the March 12, 2021, death of 6-year-old Grace Ross of New Carlisle and consulting with the decedent’s family, the St. Joseph Prosecutor’s Office Monday filed a petition to waive the juvenile defendant to adult court. The 15-year-old juvenile, who was 14 at the time of Ross’s death, is charged with acts that would be murder and a Level 3 felony if committed by an adult. A hearing on the petition has yet to be scheduled.
The Michigan City High School Student Council is once again coordinating a “drive through” collection of non-perishable food items at Ames Field. The food drive will take place Saturday, December 11 from 9 a.m. to noon. The community is encouraged to help by “driving through” the Ames Field parking lot with a donation. All items collected will go to The Salvation Army of Michigan City food pantry. Purdue University Northwest (PNW) says it will host its fall commencement ceremonies in-person, with appropriate health and safety protocols, on Saturday, Dec. 11, at its Westville campus. A total of 995 candidates are eligible to receive degrees during the two commencement ceremonies, including one doctorate degree candidate, 218 master’s degree recipients and 776 earning undergraduate degrees. A Hobart man has been arrested in connection to a bank robbery that occurred in Michigan City. Monday morning at around 10:00 a.m., police responded to a bank alarm at Horizon Bank located on 515 Franklin St. Preliminary investigation indicated that the suspect had received an undisclosed amount of money and fled on foot. Officers searched the area and located a subject matching the description of the suspect near 6th Street and Washington Street. The man was detained and evidence from the robbery was discovered. Saturday morning at 6:43 AM, deputies were summoned to the area of US 35 and CR 400 North, rural Center Township, reference a crash. Sergeant James Lear was the first to arrive on scene and confirmed the driver of the vehicle was deceased. The initial crash investigation completed by Deputy Bobby Greer and assisting deputies determined the following had occurred. A red 2002 Ford Focus had been traveling southbound on US 35. The Town of Chesterton has announced the annual snow parking ban on designated streets downtown will take effect at 12:01 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 1. According to the Town of Chesterton Facebook page, the ban prohibits parking on select streets in the Downtown between 12 and 8 a.m. during or after snows of two inches or more on: -South Calumet Road between Porter Ave. and the Norfolk Southern grade-crossing. *Broadway between South Calumet Road and Sixth Street. -Second and Third streets between Broadway and West Indiana Ave. The town says signage will be posted on the affected streets.

The Indiana State Department of health updated their weekly COVID county advisory level map last Wednesday. La Porte and Porter counties remain with a score of 2.5, in the orange level. Lake County has moved up from a score of 1.5, in the yellow level to a score of 2, in the orange level. St. Joseph, Starke, Jasper and Newton counties all moved up from a score of 2, in the orange level to a score of 2.5 in the orange level. In the past week positivity has risen in all of the counties mentioned.
The Michigan City Parks and Recreation Department is currently writing their 5-year Master Plan (2022-2026). Public input is vital to the planning process to know the wants and needs of the community to be able to successfully plan for the future development of parks and programming. The 1st draft of the Master Plan will be presented at the December 1, 2021 Park Board meeting at 5 pm in the Council Chambers at City Hall, 100 E. Michigan Blvd, Michigan City, IN. The Michigan City Festival of Lights Celebration will take place on Dec. 4 from 6 p.m.-10 p.m. at the Senior Center in Washington Park. There will be a cash bar, live music by Pointing Fingers Band , and a chili challenge where Michigan City Police and Fire Departments will face off, as well as a “Service Club Showdown.” A five dollar donation to Meals on Wheels is needed to sample the chili and vote. A La Porte County Sheriff’s deputy was nearly shot after intervening in a fight outside of a residence, according to police. During the afternoon of Nov. 17, Sergeant Jon Burger was off-duty and located near a residence along Dogwood Drive in rural Center Township. He heard loud music coming from the area of the residence, observed the occupants of a passenger vehicle exit and saw a subject emerge from the home.
