Citywide school supply drive under way

Several local organizations have announced a community-wide school supply drive, which runs through July 26. Supplies collected during the drive will be distributed to area students who are in need of materials to start the school year. Many area businesses have set up collection bins to accept donations from their employees and the general public. Collection sites are located at Al’s Supermarket (Franklin Street and Karwick locations), Captain Ed’s Candy Island & Furniture Showroom, First Trust Credit Union, the Michigan City Area Schools’ Administration Building, Michigan City’s City Hall, Meridian Title Company, First United Methodist Church, and Restore Dental Arts.

State Road 331 to be resurfaced in St. Joseph County

ST. JOSEPH COUNTY, Ind., — The Indiana Department of Transportation announced that State Road 331/Capital Avenue will be reduced to one lane in each direction for resurfacing between Jefferson Road and U.S. 20 on or after Monday, July 24. INDOT hosting public information meetings for electric vehicle program

The Indiana Department of Transportation will host public information meetings to provide updates and gather feedback regarding an annual update to the state's Electric Vehicle (EV) Infrastructure Deployment Plan. The plan is federally required as part of Indiana's participation in the National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (NEVI) program and must be updated each year. Created by the passage of the 2021 Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, NEVI provides federal funding to states to add DC Fast Charge charging stations along federally designated alternative fuel corridors (AFC’s). INDOT traffic alert: I-65 and I-94 overnight mobile operations

INDOT has a traffic alert for I-65 and I-94 in Lake and Jasper counties. Starting Sunday evening July 23, slow moving paint crews will be striping I-65 between mile marker 246-201 during the overnight hours. This is expected to take approximately three nights, weather permitting. Work will move to I-94 between mile marker 12-45 in Lake, Porter, and LaPorte counties after I-65. INDOT is asking drivers to be on the lookout for slow moving vehicles, give crews plenty of space to work and avoid driving over wet paint.

Indiana State Police investigating fatal vehicle vs. pedestrian crash on I-80

LAKE COUNTY, Ind. — Indiana State Police are investigating and seeking information on a fatal vehicle vs. pedestrian crash that happened on I-80 Tuesday night. At around 11:30 p.m., 911 calls were made to dispatch reporting a black female wearing all black walking in the roadway in the area of I-80/94 eastbound just east of Broadway.  Shortly thereafter, callers reported that the pedestrian had been struck by a vehicle.  The vehicle that struck the pedestrian left the scene. The pedestrian died as a result of the impact. Identification of the deceased is pending confirmation by the Lake County Coroner’s Office.

Railroad crossing at Hillcrest road to temporarily close in Ogden Dunes

The Ogden Dunes Police Department announced that Hillcrest Road will be closed at the railroad tracks from Saturday, July 22 through Monday July 24, for NICTD Double Track construction. Ramp from I-65 northbound to I-94 eastbound closed in Lake County

The Indiana Department of Transportation has announced that the ramp from I-65 northbound to I-94 eastbound in Lake County is closed again this weekend for concrete work The closure starts Friday evening (July 21) and is set to reopen by Monday morning. The detour will be to continue north on I-65 and take U.S. 12/20 to S.R. 51/Ripley where motorists can get on I-94 eastbound.

ISP SWAT Serves Early Morning Warrants in Hebron

MCPD officer participates in Cops Cycling for Survivors

The Michigan City Police Department is congratulating Officer Dylon Travis on participating in Cops Cycling for Survivors bicycle ride. Officer Travis rode from Merrillville to South Bend with the group. The group rides the whole state of Indiana bringing awareness of fallen officers who are killed in the line of duty and their survivors. Officers and staff from the Michigan City Police Department met the group at their stop at Westville Correctional Facility to pay tribute and support Officer Travis. The MCPD Traffic Division helped with the escort of the riders while they were in LaPorte County.

Rolling lane closures on several Portage roads through rest of July

The City of Portage announced that through Aug. 1, the roads listed below will have rolling lane closures as their crack sealing contractor will be filling cracks in the asphalt pavement. Expect delays periodically, flaggers will be present. Pilot walks away from airplane crash in Morgan Township

A pilot successfully crash-landed his airplane into a field in rural Morgan Township on Monday, the Porter County Sheriff’s Police is reporting. The Town of Chesterton posted on its Facebook page that “According to the PCSP, at approximately 4:37 p.m. the pilot, operating a single-engine Lancair ES, advised he was having engine trouble. He then found a field approximately five miles east of Malden, near the LaPorte County line, and managed to land the plane.” “There is damage to the aircraft,” the PCSP said. “The pilot was ambulatory with no injuries.” The cause of the crash is being investigated by

Walleye and saugeye successfully stocked across Indiana waterways

News release by Indiana Department of Natural Resources: This year, the Indiana Department of Natural Resources has stocked Indiana waterways with walleye and saugeye – fish that are known for being excellent table fare and for the skill it takes to catch them. Because there is no natural reproduction of walleye and saugeye in most of Indiana, the DNR runs a program to spawn and stock these fish every spring across multiple waterways for anglers to catch. U.S. 30 to close near Wanatah for road repairs

LAPORTE COUNTY, Ind. - The Indiana Department of Transportation has announced the closure of U.S. 30 eastbound between U.S. 421 and County Road South 900 West for approximately three to five days on or after Wednesday, July 19. This closure is for repairs following permitted work near the intersection of U.S. 30 and U.S. 421. Traffic going eastbound on U.S. 30 toward U.S. 421 will be split into a left turn lane and right turn lane so motorists should approach the signal with caution and follow traffic directions carefully. VPD Assistant Chief of Police, Michael J. DeHaven announces retirement

Assistant Chief of Police, Michael J. DeHaven, has announced his retirement, effective October 2, 2023, according to a news release from the Valparaiso Police Department. “Assistant Chief DeHaven is a respected leader in our community, having served in several key roles during his 27-year career with the Valparaiso Police Department,” said Mayor Matt Murphy. “We thank him for his extraordinary service and wish him well in his retirement.” Assistant Chief DeHaven began his law enforcement career with the Hendricks County Sheriff’s Department in 1995, where he spent a year and a half before joining the Valparaiso Police Department in 1996.
