PRESS RELEASE LAKE COUNTY SHERIFF'S OFFICE: Just before 11:30 a.m. yesterday, St. John, Indiana police received an emergency dispatch call for a domestic disturbance at a home in the 14000 block of W. 93rd Place in St. John. A St. John police officer arrived at the scene.  At some point, a physical altercation occurred and shots were fired. A 40-year-old male was wounded and was transported to a local hospital. The Lake County Sheriff’s Department Detective Bureau is investigating. No further information will be released at this time.

La PORTE, IN (Jan. 15, 2025) – Residents in need will soon have access to an emergency warming shelter right here in La Porte, according to Mayor Tom Dermody. Joining forces with Center Township Trustee Lisa Pierzakowski, the City has today announced a partnership with Nest Community Shelter to bring a temporary emergency shelter – dubbed Nest La Porte – to the former train depot on Washington Street. Set to open this Sunday, Jan. 19, the shelter will be open nightly from 6 p.m. to 7 a.m. through March 31. Dermody said this project provides a critical resource to those in need this winter.

Five fire departments responded to a residential house fire on Nilewood Drive just outside of La Porte and on Pine Lake Tuesday morning. The home was engulfed in fire when the first firefighters arrived. La Porte, Center, Scipio, Coolspring and Springfield battled the blaze for nearly two houses before it was brought under control; despite the efforts the home was a total loss. Indiana State Police Lieutenant Christopher L. Hill has been promoted to the rank of Colonel and will serve as the Indiana State Police Assistant Superintendent.  Hill was born and raised in Madison, Indiana. After graduating from Shawe Memorial High School in 1986, he earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Criminal Justice from the University of Dayton in 1990. Hill graduated from the 53rd Indiana State Police Recruit Academy in December of 1995.  He was assigned to patrol duties at the Versailles Post before becoming a Detective in the Gaming Division. On Friday, January 10th, Trooper Carlson responded to a vehicle crash that occurred on southbound I-65 near the 206 mile-marker. This location is a mile north of the Rensselaer/Remington exit.  It was a single vehicle crash, minor damage, and required a pullout for a 2008 Toyota Camry. During the crash investigation, it was determined that the driver was lying about his identity and was actually wanted on a probation violation through Ohio for past violent crimes. While trying to detain the driver, he forcibly pulled away and ran across all lanes of I-65 almost causing several accidents in the inclement weather.
