In honor of National Social Work Month the Michigan City Police Department is recognizing their Police Social Worker, Jocelyn Colburn. Jocelyn is a native of LaPorte, Indiana and graduated from LaPorte High School in 2016.  She then went on to get her Bachelors in Social Work from Indiana University Northwest in 2020 and then Master's in Social Work in 2023. On Tuesday, March 19th, around 6:04 P.M., Chesterton Police were dispatched to the 100 block of Jeffrey Street for a shots fired complaint. Shortly after the arrival of patrol officers, a male suspect was identified and detained by patrol officers. Detectives were summoned to the scene and a search warrant was obtained for a home in the 100 block of Jeffrey Street. Detectives recovered evidence consistent with the allegation of shots being fired. The suspect, a 49-year-old Chesterton resident has been arrested and preliminary charged with Intimidation, Level 5 Felony. This investigation remains ongoing and no additional information will be

  On March 15th in the Stardust Room at Blue Chip Casino, the Michigan City Chamber of Commerce (Chamber) held its annual dinner and awards celebration. Indiana Department of Transportation Contractor Milestone Contractors North Inc will have overnight lane closures on U.S. 30 between State Road 55 and State Road 51 beginning on or after Sunday, March 24 through late November for a resurfacing project. Lane closures will be in place during the overnight hours of approximately 8 p.m. to 6 a.m., with alternating intersections closed temporarily when work is occurring in that area. Work will begin on U.S. 30 between State Road 55 and I-65 through late May, at which point crews will switch to work on U.S. 30 between I-65 and State Road 51.

CSX Transportation will have lane closures on U.S. 30 between Calumet Ave and Keilman St beginning on or after Monday, March 25. Alternating lane closures will be in place for approximately five days while they replace the asphalt approaches at their grade crossing. Motorists should be prepared for changing traffic patterns and delays during peak times. INDOT encourages drivers to allow extra time when driving through this area and follow traffic directions carefully. Motorists should slow down, exercise caution and drive distraction-free through all work zones.

According to the La Porte County Sheriff's Office there is a wicked accident. Avoid the area of  US 30 & CR 1350 South due to this crash. Both of the eastbound lanes of US 30 are closed due to a personal injury CMV crash. EB US 30, at US 421, will be closed for several hours for the crash investigation, cleanup and recovery of the CMVs at the scene. This morning at 3:51 AM, deputies responded to CR 1000 North in the area of Frontage Road, reference a single vehicle crash. The initial on-scene investigation completed by Deputy Jeff Armstrong and assisting deputies determined the following had occurred. A black 2012 Range Rover was traveling eastbound on CR 1000 North. The vehicle left the south side of the roadway east of Frontage Road and traveled into a ditch. The vehicle continued traveling eastbound in the ditch, crashed into several trees, and overturned.   A Saint Patrick’s Day motor vehicle pursuit (MVP) ended in the arrest of Qihui SUN (33), of Queens, New York.   At approximately 1:19 PM, Deputy Julian Sanchez began traveling behind an eastbound passenger vehicle on US 20 in the 4200 east block. He paced the vehicle for a distance and found it to be traveling in excess of the posted speed limit. The Michigan City Department of Water Works will begin the semi-annual fire hydrant flushing on Monday, April 1. This is done to insure the hydrants are in proper working order for the spring and summer months, and also to find any hydrants that may have been damaged over the winter. The city expects the program to take about eight weeks to complete. The city says if anyone should experience any discoloration in their water, they should let the water run for a short time and the water will clear.

Representative Frank Mrvan announced the details of the 2024 Congressional Art Competition for high school students from Indiana’s First Congressional District. The Porter County Sheriff’s Office is introducing their new therapy K9, Porter. He is an Australian Labradoodle and the department’s first certified therapy dog. His primary handler will be Patrol Commander Praschak. Also certified were backup handlers Case Manager Kerry Slaga and Chief Tim Mantueffel. Porter will be used to comfort those in crisis in a multitude of situations. He made a visit to the Jail Division on Friday. Porter was purchased using leftover money from a previous K9 fundraiser and from a donation from Ralph and Sue Neff.
