Lute Road closed Thursday and Friday in Portage

In Portage, Lute Road between Willowcreek Road and Airport Road will be closed to traffic on Thursday and Friday, Aug. 28 and 29 (weather permitting) for road milling and asphalt patching, according to the Portage Police Department. Police are asking drivers to use alternate routes. See the Portage Police Department Facebook page for any updates.

Fireworks at Fox Park this Thursday in La Porte

The City of La Porte Park and Recreation Department says it has rescheduled the fireworks show, postponed during LakeFest in July, for this Thursday in Fox Park following a performance by local favorites, Middle of the Road. The band begins at 7 p.m., with the fireworks set for approximately 8:30. On their Facebook page the City of La Porte Park and Recreation Department thanked the LakeFest sponsors for funding the fireworks show, along with the other events at this year's festival. Hammond Man Indicted on Child Pornography Charges

HAMMOND - On August 22, 2025, a federal Grand Jury in Hammond, Indiana approved a three count Indictment charging David Michael Reyes with production, distribution, and possession of child pornography in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Indiana. Reyes was employed as the Director of Buildings and Grounds within the Hammond City School System at the time of his arrest on August 15, 2025, and has been in custody since that date. “Today’s charges stem from the quick and coordinated efforts of local and federal law enforcement, with the full cooperation of the Hammond City School System,”

State Road 10 to close for seal coating

In Jasper County, Indiana Department of Transportation maintenance crews will conduct seal coating operations resulting in the closure of State Road 10 beginning on or after Tuesday, Aug. 26. State Road 10 will be closed between U.S. 231 and State Road 49 for approximately three days. The official detour for this closure will follow U.S. 231, State Road 14 and State Road 49. Through traffic should utilize the detour or seek an alternate route. Local traffic should exercise caution and follow traffic directions carefully in the area where work is occurring. Michigan City Police Department to increase impaired driving enforcement ahead of Labor Day

Michigan City — As summer winds down, the Michigan City Police Department is partnering with the Indiana Criminal Justice Institute (ICJI) to prevent impaired driving and save lives. Update: railroad closure in Ogden Dunes

In Ogden Dunes, the railroad tracks leaving town toward Highway 12 will be closed on Monday, August 25. The closure is expected to begin sometime after noon and will last at least five days.The dates are subject to change depending on project progress and weather conditions. La Porte County Sheriff’s Office reopen cold case investigation

The La Porte County Sheriff’s Office is reopening a cold case from over 35 years ago and are seeking the public's help. On March 11, 1989, deputies from the La Porte County Sheriff’s Office responded to State Road 8 approximately one mile west of State Road 39 for a body located in a water-filled ditch. The body was identified as 16-year-old Tamara Gifford of Florida but had relatives who resided in Starke County. U.S. 41/S.R. 152 to be resurfaced in Lake County

In Lake County, an Indiana Department of Transportation contractor will have lane closures on U.S. 41/State Road 152/Indianapolis Boulevard between 175th Street and Ridge Road beginning on or after Monday, August 25 for a road resurfacing project. Alternating lane closures and changing traffic patterns are scheduled through late October. Work will begin with lane closures in place for approximately five days for daytime center island work on the north and south ends of the project area, as well as overnight lane closures during the hours of 8 p.m. and 6 a.m. between Ridge Rd and 175th St for milling operations.

The Chesterton Police Department is now accepting applications for its first annual Citizen Police Academy this fall. Valparaiso Police Department welcomes new Investigations Administrative Assistant

The Valparaiso Police Department on Friday welcomed Rachel Carden as their new Investigations Administrative Assistant. Rachel is a graduate of Indiana University, where she earned her Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology.
