Working smoke detectors saved a sleeping family Saturday according to the Liberty Township Volunteer Fire Department. Firefighters arrived on scene with light smoke showing from a mobile home late Saturday morning at around 9:35 a.m. on April 4. A family in the 100 block of Leslie Way in the Forest Oaks Mobile Home Park evacuated safely when their smoke detectors activated. Fire crews deployed hand lines towards the front door, but ultimately used a water can to extinguish the fire found in the kitchen. Indiana State Police are warning of a scam notice. The Indiana State Police Lowell post shared a scam notice from Sgt. Ted Bohner of the Indiana State Police Bremen Post's Facebook page. Bohner stated on Facebook that he has received the scam twice on Monday. "Do not reply, scan the QR, or feel there is any legitimacy to this," Bohner said. "Note the signs: ✅ Urgency: Immediate. The La Porte County Parks and Recreation recently said last week their maintenance staff has started the process of turning on water and prepping park restrooms for the season. Beginning April 15, restrooms will be open from approximately 7 a.m. until 7 p.m. daily. For questions call the Park Office at 219-326-9600.

In St. Joseph County, State Road 23 will have lane closures between Wolf St in North Liberty and Olive Street/Locust Road in South Bend beginning on or after Wednesday, April 8. State Road 23 will be reduced to one lane with flaggers directing traffic in the area where work is occurring. These lane closures are for road resurfacing, with road widening occurring in some locations along this stretch of State Road 23. Resurfacing work will be ongoing through the end of November. One person is dead after a crash on U.S. 35 in Starke County. On Monday just after 8:30am, Starke County Deputies were dispatched to the area of U.S. 35 north of 700 North. in the Hamlet area for a report of a motor vehicle accident involving a commercial vehicle and passenger car. It was determined that a commercial vehicle carrying a roll off dumpster was traveling southbound on U.S. 35 and a 2011 Chevrolet Equinox was traveling northbound on U.S. 35. The Town of Chesterton is reminding drivers to be aware of two geese crossings on 1100N near nesting grounds. “Two such nesting grounds—as folks who live in Rosehill Estates or Stone Meadows or 1100 Woods well know—are the wetlands along 1100N just west of South 11th Street, and the detention ponds across the street from Dogwood Park, the Town of Chesterton said on their Facebook page. “Both will soon be nurseries for three or four mating pairs, who will undoubtedly teach their children the joys of jaywalking and the lessons of loitering.” The Town says when traveling 1100N this spring

The Water Department's spring water system flushing is set to begin this weekend, according to La Porte Water Superintendent Tim Werner.
