Wireless Network Creating “Swath of Connectivity” for Michigan City Students

Michigan City Area Schools, in partnership with Neo Network Development, has entered Phase 2 of a comprehensive project providing free wireless broadband internet access to a growing number of its students. Funding for the wireless broadband project has been made possible by a $600,000 grant from the Indiana Governor’s Emergency Education Relief Fund (GEER). A 60-foot pole and wireless equipment recently erected at Knapp Elementary School will provide free wireless internet service to all MCAS-owned devices at approximately 300 homes with up to a one-mile radius of the school. Michigan City Human Rights Commission Scholarship Contest

The Michigan City Human Rights Commission will begin accepting entries for the 2022 Hawkins-Williams Educational Scholarship Award and the 2022 Judi Huber Educational Scholarship Award on Monday, March 21.  The winner of the Hawkins-Williams Educational Scholarship will receive $1,000.  The contest is open to any graduating high school senior attending school within the Michigan City Area Schools boundaries.  The entries must include an essay related to the stated theme, a certified copy of their high school transcripts and three three  letters of recommendation.  The Judi Huber Educational Scholarship is also for graduating high school seniors.  In addition to the required

U.S. 41 to have lane closures near Schneider in Lake County

Bridge work will begin on U.S. 41 between State Road 2 and State Road 10 in Lake County on or after Monday, March 21. The contract includes superstructure replacements for the bridges over Singleton Ditch and Brown Ditch and will result in alternating lane closures in the area through late September.  Restrictions will begin with one lane and shoulder closed in both the northbound and southbound directions for the construction of temporary median crossovers and to widen the shoulders, which will take approximately four weeks.  When the crossovers are complete, the bridge replacements will be conducted in two phases. MCHS Student pitches her business plan, selected to participate in Region 6 Finals of Innovate WithIN

A Michigan City High School student with career goals in the fashion world, is hoping to catch her lucky break next month, Michigan City Area Schools says. Simara Jenkins, a junior at MCHS junior is pitching her business plans to the Society of Innovators at Purdue University Northwest. Jenkins, who plans to graduate early, was selected to participate in the Innovate WithIN Region 6 Finals in April. Indiana Dunes State Park offering firewood cutting permits, only downed trees are available to cut on weekends

Indiana Dunes State Park says its labor staff has been busy cutting down dead trees that have been deemed hazardous by the state arborist. All these trees will be dropped before April 1 to prevent destruction to any animals that may begin nesting this spring. Indiana Dunes State Park says that due to this large amount of downed trees they’re offering firewood cutting permits. Police looking for missing Gary man

The Gary Police Department is seeking the community's assistance in locating 57-year-old Stanley Steele. Steele has been missing since March 4 and detectives have exhausted all leads in attempting to locate him. He is a black male, 5 feet 6 inches tall and weighs approximately 155 pounds. New mattress plant opens 165,000 square foot facility in La Porte

Laporte County Sheriff Releases 2021 Annual Report and Statistics

La Porte County Sheriff John T. Boyd announces the release of the 2021 Annual Report. Pursuit of stolen Porsche on I-65 yields arrest of convicted felon

A convicted felon was arrested Tuesday after police pursued a vehicle reported stolen on I-65, the Lake County Sheriff’s Office says. At around 11:15 a.m., the Lake County Sheriff’s Highway Interdiction Team attempted to make a traffic stop on I-65 near the Jasper County line. Police say a 2017 Porsche reported stolen out of Chicago had been following another vehicle too closely. As the officers attempted to make a traffic stop, the Porsche accelerated heading southbound on I-65. Ogden Dunes Police give information on 2022 parking permits

Ogden Dunes is informing the public that beginning May 1, you will be required to have your 2022 Parking Permits. Police say you can purchase them beginning Monday, March 21. Michigan City Police investigating Sunday night shooting on West Barker Avenue 

Michigan City Police are investigating a shooting that occured Sunday night on Barker Avenue.  At around 10:30 p.m. dispatch received 9-1-1 calls for shots fired in the area of 204 W Barker Avenue and that someone had possibly been shot. Initial reports indicated that no one had been struck by gunfire, but officers later learned that the victim was transported to Franciscan Health Michigan City with non-life threatening injuries by an unknown third party.  Officers looked for evidence and witnesses. Two Separate Incidents – Two Wanted. Men Arrested and Two Guns Seized

Yesterday afternoon (3/14) at approximately 4:17 PM, Deputy Ryan Elcock was traveling eastbound on US 20 east of Fail Road. An eastbound US 20 passenger vehicle, traveling in excess of the posted speed limit, proceeded to pass Deputy Elcock on the right. Deputy Elcock initiated a traffic stop near CR 250 East on US 20. The passenger was identified as Kameron R. MARTIN (29 YOA) of South Bend. It was determined MARTIN was a wanted person by authorities in Elkhart County and he was immediately taken into custody. Man Arrested Following Crash with MCAS School Bus

Yesterday afternoon (3/14) at approximately 3:29 PM, deputies responded to a hit and run crash involving a Michigan City Area Schools school bus and a motor vehicle at the intersection of Orchard Drive and Wozniak Road. Dumpster Program set to return to La Porte

The City of La Porte announced its Dumpster Program will be returning for its third consecutive year this spring. For the past two years, the program has allowed city residents to dispose of unwanted items at no cost. Beginning in April, dumpsters will be set out in their previous locations: across from the Water Department (1119 Lake St.) and behind the Street Department (1206 2nd St.).
