South Shore Line announces temporary busing through Jan. 21

In order to accommodate ongoing work for the double track project, the South Shore Line plans to bus midday passengers between Carroll Ave. and Dune Park stations, now through Thursday, Jan. 20, with Friday, Jan. 21, being a contingency date. VASIA program swears in final class of volunteers for 2021

A class of three volunteers were the third and final group in 2021 sworn in as Volunteer Advocates for Seniors and Incapacitated Adults (VASIA), joining Franciscan Health Hammond’s program to represent those unable to advocate for themselves. Jada Jarrett and Jaylah Jarrett, who joined virtually, and Caitlyn Lent were sworn in at a ceremony at Lake Superior Court. City of La Porte Park and Recreation Department looking for ice rink attendants

The City of La Porte Park and Recreation Department is looking for ice rink attendants to work evening and weekend shifts through Feb. 21. This is a seasonal position. Fatal crash in Portage Monday night

A fatal crash occurred Monday night in Portage according to Portage Police. At 12:47 a.m. Tuesday, the police announced that all lanes of US Highway 20 east of Center Street and west of Samuelson Road are closed until further notice. At around 11:33 p.m. officers responded to a report of a single vehicle rollover in the area of Jensen Drive.  Upon arrival the driver, who was the only occupant, was found to have sustained fatal injuries.  The Portage Police Department Crash Reconstruction Team is on scene conducting the investigation. Longtime La Porte Police Captain Thomas Thate retires

La Porte Police Captain Thomas Thate retired from the LaPorte Police Department Friday after 33 years, and one month of service.   The La porte Police Department says during his career he rose through the ranks of Corporal, Sergeant and Captain. Captain Thate also worked the detective bureau, serving as Chief of Detectives as well in that division. Thate worked drug investigations as well with the multi departmental drug task force. Indiana students encouraged to apply to Governor’s STEM Team, Students to receive $1,000 scholarship

La Porte County Health Department gives COVID testing information update

The La Porte County Health Department has updated COVID testing information at the 302 W. 8th St. location. This testing site's hours are Monday, Wednesday, Friday 9 a.m. - 7 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday 9 a.m. - 5 p.m. It will be closed Jan. 17, 18 , and 19. Diagnostic Lab and Rapid testing available if medical criteria is met per IDOH.  To secure an appointment pre register at scheduling.coronavirus.in.gov Walk-in appointments are not available at this time.Any child under the age of 18 must have a parent or legal guardian with them in order to be administered a COVID-19 test.

La Porte County Sheriff’s Office Employees Recognized

On January 8, 2022, the La Porte County Sheriff’s Office hosted its annual recognition dinner and agency meeting at Heston Hills Banquet Center. The event is held once a year and allows the Department to recognize employees for their heroic acts and for life-saving events. Sheriff John Boyd addressed the attendees and announced the accomplishments and highlights of the agency during 2020 (canceled last year due to COVID) and 2021. No injuries after head-on collision involving Lake County squad car during police pursuit 

Two people were arrested and no injuries were reported Thursday after a head-on collision occurred during a police pursuit in Lake County.  Just before 1:30 p.m., a police officer with the Lake County Sheriff’s Department attempted to stop the driver of a black Jeep Cherokee SRT for speeding near US-20 and Clay Street in Gary. The driver of the SUV accelerated, leading police in a pursuit.  The suspect vehicle eventually went through an alley at Whitcomb Street and hit a Lake County police squad car head on.  The police officer was able to initiate a pit maneuver in an attempt

La Porte County Family YMCA: A few spots left for their youth program on Monday

The La Porte County Family YMCA says there are still a few more spots left for its youth sports camp happening Monday at its Elston branch. The YMCA says the one day camp will be filled with lots of action and variety as the kids explore many different sports from basketball, soccer, dodgeball, and even some fun pool games. The YMCA also reminds parents/guardians to have your child bring their swimsuit, water bottle and a sack lunch. The camp is open to all boys and girls in grades 3-6. The cost is $10 for members and $15 for non members.

Chesterton Fire Department: Landlord smoke detector certificates due to CFD by end of month

The Chesterton Fire Department is reminding landlords that smoke detector certificates are due to the CFD by Monday, Jan. 31, according to the Town of Chesterton. The forms certify that “required maintenance has been performed on all detectors in the owner’s units and that the detectors are in good working condition” as of the date on the form. Forms may be obtained at the CFD station, 702 Broadway; or downloaded. A download link has also been posted on the Town of Chesterton Facebook page.

Temporary refrigerated ice rink announced for downtown La Porte

The City of La Porte Park and Recreation Department has announced there will be a temporary refrigerated ice rink at Monroe and State Streets downtown from January 21 to February 21. Captain Bello was sworn in as a reserve officer on Feb. 13, 1996 and continued as an active member until his death Jan. 10, 2022. Indiana Secretary of State announces record number of business filings in 2021

Indiana Secretary of State Holli Sullivan announced a record-breaking number of new businesses were registered in Indiana in 2021, with nearly 100,000 new businesses registered. Most users completed their registration through INBiz, Indiana’s business registration portal. Overall, 94,670 businesses were registered in 2021. 86,416 filings were for businesses based in Indiana. 9,623 filings were businesses headquartered outside of the state. In total, registrations increased 26.3% in 2021 from 74,937 in 2020.
