Michigan City High School Announces Co-Principals

Michigan City High School has announced new leadership roles. Sarah Hendricks and Kyle Dean are now co-principals. Mrs. Hendricks is a graduate of MCHS and joined the MCHS staff as Assistant Principal during the 2020-21 school year. Previously, she was a school counselor at MCHS, as well as Head Coach of the Wolves volleyball team. She also served as Dean at Penn High School in Mishawaka. Mr. Dean comes to MCHS from Westville High School, where he served as Assistant Principal since 2018. He has been a science teacher at the high-school level since 2012, and he held a principal

Valparaiso Police Swear-in New Officer

The Valparaiso Police Department has added a new officer with the swearing-in of Michael “Jason” Wray on June 8, 2021. Mayor Matt Murphy performed the ceremony within the council chambers of City Hall. Chief Balon, with numerous officers and civilian staff, joined the friends and family of Jason, who were in attendance to witness the event. During the event, Chief Balon welcomed Jason to the Valparaiso Police family and congratulated him on his appointment. Jason is a 1997 graduate of the Calvary Christian School and earned a Bachelor of Science degree in 2015 from Purdue University, while majoring in Psychology.

Sinkhole Found in Duneland Chamber Parking Lot

A sinkhole was discovered over the weekend, in the Duneland Chamber of Commerce parking lot at 220 Broadway, according to the Town of Chesterton. Chamber President Maura Durham, who was making the rounds of the European Market when she saw a small hole in the asphalt then noticed that the asphalt itself was spongy when pressed. Durham barricaded the area and contacted the Chesterton Street Department. Tuesday morning Assistant Street Commissioner Dan Moy was able to confirm that the only thing immediately beneath the asphalt was air. In the afternoon hours of June 8th, 2021, members of the LaPorte County Drug Task Force, a HIDTA Initiative, The Fugitive Apprehension Street Team (FAST), The Michigan City Police Department, the Michigan City SWAT team, and the LaPorte County Sheriff’s Department ERT, effected 2 arrests as the result of a search warrant that was executed at 314 South Street, Michigan City, IN. Laporte County Passing of Retired k9 Hokie

It is with great sadness that the LCSO announces the recent passing of retired K9 Hokie, a 15-year-old German Shepherd. From 2008-2019, Hokie served the citizens of La Porte County fearlessly and with a tremendous amount of loyalty. Over the years, Hokie was responsible for numerous drug seizures and apprehensions. Hokie participated in dozens of public demonstrations for various civic organizations and became quite popular among youth throughout La Porte County. Hokie lived a happy retirement and he will be missed by many, none more so greater than Sergeant Andrew Hahn.

Porter & La Porte County Road Work Update

Northbound State Road 49 to be one lane near I-94 PORTER COUNTY, Ind. - The Indiana Department of Transportation announces a lane closure for bridge work on State Road 49 northbound on Thursday, June 17 between Indian Boundary Rd and I-94. Work will be conducted under the bridge, but the right lane of State Road 49 will need to be closed to safely access the area. DEPUTIES INVESTIGATE MULTI-VEHICLE FATALITY CRASH

On June 13, 2021 at 6:28 PM, deputies were summoned to US 20 near Roeske Avenue reference a multi-vehicle personal injury crash. Deputies quickly arrived and found a large scene located in the eastbound lanes of US 20. The initial investigation completed by deputies determined the following had occurred triggering the crash. Brettin: Aftowski promoted to police captain

The City of La Porte Police today promoted one of its officers, according to Chief Paul Brettin. SGT Scott Aftowski was promoted to Captain following the appointment of CPT Bill Degnegaard to Assistant Chief. A 21-year veteran of the department, Aftowski has served in the investigative bureau as well as a street supervisor. Brettin said he believes CPT Aftowski will do well in his new role. WESTVILLE BUSINESS OWNER CHARGED AND ARRESTED FOLLOWING LARGE SCALE INVESTIGATION

During the early morning hours on May 5, 2021, Midnight Patrol Shift Deputies responded to a rural Clinton Township residence for a burglary in progress. The investigation quickly progressed and grew much larger following a series of follow up interviews. Credible information was developed that stolen automobile parts were being taken to a La Porte County business and being sold. Hiring Teens? New Register with New System by July 1

Effective July 1, 2021, schools will no longer issue work permits for minor employees (under age 18). Instead, employers who employ five or more minor employees will now be responsible for tracking and reporting minor-employee information via the state's Youth Employment System (YES). YES is live now, and employers can begin using the system today. Indiana employers are encouraged to test-drive and become familiar with YES before the new reporting requirement goes into effect on July 1. Leaving Scene of Accident with Serious Bodily Injury & Vehicle Break Ins

On June 6th , 2021 at approximately 0100hrs, Officers from Uniform Patrol Shift Three were dispatched to the 3900 Block of Franklin St in reference to a pedestrian being struck by a vehicle. Officer Ortega arrived on scene and observed a subject lying in the roadway and appeared to be suffering from head trauma. The subject was immediately transported to Franciscan Health by LaPorte County EMS for medical attention. Witnesses indicated that the pedestrian was crossing Franklin St near Kintzele Rd when a silver SUV struck the pedestrian and fled the scene. Burns Harbor: Semi Rollover On Us 20 In Burns Harbor Congests Traffic

A semi-tractor trailer rollover in Burns Harbor blocked both lanes of eastbound U.S. Highway 20 late Tuesday morning and afternoon, the Town of Chesterton is reporting. The semi operator was exiting eastbound I-94, apparently at too high a speed, when his rig overturned and came to rest across both lanes of eastbound U.S. 20. For around an hour, eastbound U.S. 20 was impassable. Eventually, first-responders opened the shoulder and motorists were able to “creep by.” Eastbound U.S. 20 was fully re-opened nearly three hours after the accident .
