LA PORTE, Ind. – As the 2025-26 school year winds down in a few weeks, La Porte Community School Corporation (LPCSC) is recognizing 31 staff members retiring this spring, a group whose combined service to Slicer students totals 888 years. The retirees were honored Thursday evening at the district's annual recognition gala, hosted by the La Porte Educational Development Foundation. The retirees represent nearly every corner of LPCSC's work, including classroom teachers, special education staff, support staff, maintenance, technology, and central office. In Porter County, Church Street in Crocker will be closed at 8 a.m. today, May 21, according to the Town of Chesterton Facebook page. It will reopen at approximately 5 p.m. Friday, May 22. The reason for the around-the-clock closure is a storm sewer installation along Church Street between 1050N (LaHayne Road) and Center Street. Residents of Church Street will be able to access their homes from Center Street (via Tower Street) but not from 1050N.

SOUTH BEND – On May 14, 2026, Terrence Baker, 46 years old, of South Bend, Indiana, was sentenced by United States District Court Judge Cristal C. Brisco after pleading guilty to being a convicted felon in possession of a firearm, announced United States Attorney Adam L. Mildred. A 37-year-old La Porte woman miraculously survived an unfortunate and frightening incident Monday morning, according to the La Porte County Sheriff's Office. The woman was operating her 2012 GMC Acadia northbound in the 3100 north block of Fail Road when a large tree located off the west side of Fail Road fell to the east and on top of the woman’s vehicle. Police say the woman was trapped inside the vehicle and later extricated from the driver’s seat. She was airlifted from the scene and transported to a regional hospital for advanced medical treatment. No further updates were given on

The La Porte County Sheriff’s Office released statistics from a recent U.S. 20 traffic safety project. Last Wednesday, the sheriff's office participated in a multi-state traffic safety project along U.S. 20. Agencies from twelve (12) states - Oregon, Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, Nebraska, Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York, and Massachusetts - partnered to raise awareness and reduce crashes on U.S. 20. The Sheriff’s Office was included in the project due to the high volume of crashes on U.S. 20 in La Porte County. Deputies worked the project during peak travel times - specifically during the mid-morning and mid-afternoon hours.

La PORTE, IN (May 20, 2026) - The City of La Porte Police Department today announced Captain Chae Uhlemann will take over as the new Assistant Chief, according to Police Chief Matt Drangmeister. Uhlemann will replace former Assistant Chief Jim Ferguson, who recently stepped down from the position. An 18-year veteran of the department, Uhlemann is the current Chief of Detectives and has also served as the Physical Tactics Instructor, Taser Instructor and Bike Patrol Officer. Michigan City Area Schools has announced plans to participate in the Summer Food Service Program (SFSP). Free meals will be made available to all children 18 years of age and under and to persons over 18 years who are enrolled in a state-approved educational program for the mentally or physically disabled. Free meals will be provided to all children without charge and are the same for all children. Children must be present to receive their meals. Deputies investigating fatal crash on U.S. 20 in La Porte County from the La Porte County Sheriff's Office One person died following a crash on U.S. 20 early Sunday in La Porte County. Just after 12:45 a.m., deputies responded to the area of U.S. 20 and Michigan Street for a crash involving a passenger vehicle and commercial motor vehicle (CMV). The initial on-scene investigation completed by Deputy Jon Sikorski and assisting deputies determined the following had occurred.
