Michigan City Government holiday season closures

City Hall and all other Michigan City municipal government offices will be closed to the public on Tuesday, Dec. 24 and Wednesday, Dec. 25 in observance of Christmas Eve and Christmas Day; as well as Tuesday, Dec. 31 and Wednesday, Jan. 1 in observance of New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day. Bus service also will not operate on those four days. Both weeks, the Refuse Department will pick up their normal routes on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday. Town of Chesterton garbage collection holiday schedule

The Town of Chesterton announced their garbage collection holidays schedule. All Town of Chesterton municipal offices will be closed on Tuesday and Wednesday, Dec. 24-25, in observance of Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. Municipal offices will also be closed on Tuesday and Wednesday, Dec. 31-Jan. 1, in observance of New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day. Republic Services will collect refuse and recycling on both Tuesday routes, that is, on Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve. Noontime Christmas Eve Service for Families

Indiana State Police give results of I-80 traffic blitz

This past Sunday, troopers assigned to the late shift conducted a brief traffic blitz along I-80. In only four hours, they issued 20 citations and 19 warnings, covered 2 crashes, and arrested 4 individuals (14 criminal charges filed). Three of those arrested were for O.W.I.

Porter County Health Department issues public notice of petroleum release, spill or overfill

The Porter County Health Department on Thursday issued a public notice of a petroleum release, spill or overfill. The Department stated the following in a press release: Local health departments are required by statute (IC 13-23-16) to inform the public of the discovery of released regulated substances at an underground storage tank site or in the surrounding area under 329 IAC 9-4-1 (1) or a spill or overfill under 329 IAC 9-4-4 (a). The Indiana Department of Environmental Management (IDEM) was notified on December 18, 2024, of such an incident from the owner or operator of the Speedway #6675 facility

HFL donates $750,000 to new Michigan City playground

MICHIGAN CITY – The Fedder’s Alley All-Inclusive Playground and Fitness Park expected to break ground in 2025 is significantly closer to fruition as a result of a $750,000 grant from the Health Foundation of La Porte. “The Fedder’s Alley All-Inclusive Playground and Fitness Park will offer opportunities for all ages and abilities,” Parks Superintendent Shannon Eason said. “I am grateful for the support of Health Foundation of La Porte’s generous financial support. New Fee Structure for Trash Pick-up Starts Jan. 1 in Michigan City

ISP Requests Public’s Assistance Identifying Vehicle from Interstate Shooting on I-65

Portage officer and K9 help find missing man

A missing man was found on Tuesday thanks to Portage Police Corporal Overton and K9 Bane. Police say the man, who is in his 70s and has dementia, crashed his car and walked away into a wooded area, as he was confused. Several hours later, police were called and made aware of the incident. Overton and K9 Bane arrived on scene to attempt a track into the woods. The man was found 20 minutes and almost half a mile later and was able to get medical help for hypothermia.

Man leads police on pursuit from Indiana to Chicago with child in car

A 26-year-old from Illinois man is facing criminal charges after fleeing from Indiana police into Chicago with a 4-year-old in the vehicle. Just after 5 p.m.Tuesday, Highland police attempted to perform a traffic stop on a BMW in Hammond.  The officers were participating in a joint law enforcement operation involving multiple agencies.
