CHESTERTON, Ind. - To show appreciation and to say thank you for their service to the community, the South Shore Line (SSL) is inviting all doctors, nurses, EMTs, paramedics, firefighters, other medical personnel, and law enforcement to ride the train free of charge Saturday, September 7, through Wednesday, September 11, 2024, on all Westbound and Eastbound weekday and weekend trains. To ride free, medical and law enforcement personnel must only present a valid work ID to SSL train personnel that shows they are employed at a hospital, doctor’s office, medical facility, fire department, police station, prison, or aforementioned related agency.

Residents looking to discard of large unwanted items will be able to do so in the coming weeks, according to La Porte Mayor Tom Dermody. Running Monday, Oct. 7 through Friday, Oct. 11, city residents will be able to place large and heavy trash on the curb for pick-up on their regular trash day. A bicyclist died of injuries sustained when he was struck Monday morning by an SUV on East Porter Avenue, the Chesterton Police Department is reporting. The victim has been identified as 65-year-old Salvador Mujica, of Porter. Ogden Dunes has been awarded funding through the Community Crossings Matching Grant and will soon begin another road paving project in town. In preparation, two new dry wells have already been installed on the north side of Shore Drive at Diana Road to assist with storm water mitigation. Milling is scheduled to begin on Sept. 16 and should take approximately two days to complete. Once milling has been completed, paving will begin and should take approximately 5-7 days to complete.
