MCHS MCJROTC Earns Awards At Portage Drill Meet

Despite having the smallest team at the Portage High School Marine Corps Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (MCJROTC) military drill competition on February 26, 2022, the Michigan City High School (MCHS) cadets earned first, second and third place trophies. The Wolves Color Guard A finished first, Color Guard B finished second, and the Armed Exhibition platoon earned a third place finish. City of La Porte Fire Department offering free first aid/CPR classes

The City of La Porte Fire Department is offering free first aid/CPR classes again this year. They also offer “Stop the Bleed” classes for teachers and schools that require it. Classes run for approximately 4 hours and are on a first come, first serve basis and will be held at Laporte Fire Station 1 located at 809 W 18th Street. Class dates and times are as follows: March 5 at 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. March 9 at 4 p.m. May 20 at 8 a.m. June 23 at 4 p.m. July 18 at 4 p.m. August 23 at 12 noon

Michigan City Area Schools launches Kindergarten Roundup, magnet programs also enrolling students for next fall

Michigan City Area Schools has announced that Kindergarten enrollment is now open online for the 2022-23 school year. Kindergarten students must be 5 years old by October 1, 2022. Parents and guardians can visit www.EducateMC.net/kindergarten to begin the enrollment process. Once basic information about the student is received by MCAS, parents will receive instructions on setting up a PowerSchool account to finalize enrollment. To complete the online enrollment process in PowerSchool, parents/guardians will need their child’s official birth certificate, parent/guardian’s driver’s license or state photo ID, proof of residency, their child’s immunization records, and proof of lead testing. Michigan City woman sentenced to 21 months in prison for straw purchasing firearms

A Michigan City woman was sentenced to 21 months in prison for straw purchasing firearms, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Northern District of Indiana. On Thursday 43 year-old Latavia Fleming, of Michigan City, was sentenced by United States District Court Chief Judge Jon E. DeGuilio after pleading guilty to making a false statement during the purchase of a firearm, United States Attorney Clifford D. Johnson announced. Fleming was sentenced to 21 months in prison followed by 2 years of supervised release.  According to documents in the case, over the course of several months in 2020, Fleming bought

South Shore Line Double Track project update, road closure details for Michigan City

Man wanted for multiple felonies, including rape, leads trooper on pursuit in Lake County

A man that was wanted for multiple felonies, including rape, led troopers on a pursuit in Lake County early Wednesday. Just before 3:50 a.m., a trooper stopped an SUV for speeding on I-65 near the 252 mile-marker, in Merrillville. While speaking with the driver, the driver began to panic and while acting like he was looking for his driver’s license, he placed the SUV into gear and fled. New City of La Porte police officers sworn in

City of La Porte Police Chief Brettin swore in Alexander Mendoza, Peter Pienta, Dalton Pflughaupt, and Patrick Quail on Wednesday as new Patrol Officers for the LaPorte City Police Department. Chief Brettin also swore in Anthony Ring as a Reserve Officer for the LaPorte Police Department. Anthony is currently employed with the LaPorte Fire Department. Anthony swore in as a Reserve Officer to become a member of the Emergency Response Team (ERT) currently being put together for the LaPorte Police Department. Anthony is a Emergency Medical Technician whom will assist The ERT team with their duties.

Berrien County Sheriff’s Detective Bureau identifies vehicle of interest possibly associated with fatal traffic crash

The Berrien County Sheriff’s Detective Bureau has identified a vehicle of interest that may be associated with a fatal traffic crash that occurred February 20, in Niles.  On Sunday, at approximately 4:42AM a 9-1-1 call was received involving a vehicle vs pedestrian accident in the area of South 3rd Street and Brooks Street, Niles Township. Berrien County Sheriff Deputies and additional first responders were dispatched to the scene identifying a female subject, Monica Clubb of Niles, seriously injured after being struck by a vehicle. La Porte County Sheriff’s Office cracking down on dangerous, aggressive driving

The La Porte County Sheriff’s Office (LCSO) is stepping up patrols to help curb dangerous and aggressive driving.  The enforcement campaign runs through Monday, March 21. The safety initiative is designed to reduce crashes and traffic fatalities and to promote safe driving around St. Patrick’s Day and the NCAA Tournament.  It also comes at a time when roadway deaths continue to climb across the state and nation. South Bend woman dies from injuries after snowmobile accident in LaPorte County

The passenger of a snowmobile accident Saturday night in LaPorte County has died from her injuries. The Indiana DNR announced Wednesday morning that 21 year old Allysen Walls, of South Bend died as the result of injuries she sustained in the accident.  Additional investigation has determined the accident occurred when the snowmobile struck a stationary vehicle on a private driveway and not in the actual roadway in the 300 block of US Highway 6. DNR names Indianapolis man as person who is missing in Lake Michigan

The Indiana DNR has named 22 year-old Bryce Dunfee, of Indianapolis as the person who went missing Monday afternoon at Indiana Dunes National Park.  The DNR says Dunfee was last seen wearing a gray shirt with black sleeves, khaki pants, and black shoes. The search is still ongoing. Monday afternoon around 5:30 p.m. responders were dispatched to West Beach at Indiana Dunes National Park reference a person in the water. Valparaiso Police: False accusation against officer results in plea agreement

A man has been charged with multiple counts of false informing after making a false accusation against a Valparaiso police officer.  In a statement, Valparaiso Police Chief Jeffrey Balon says that in October of 2020, Valparaiso Police became aware of accusations made by Mr. Caleb Hernandez against VPD Officer Benjamin Teufel.  These allegations included that Officer Teufel “did, during a traffic stop, turn off his body worn camera, removed his weapon from its holster, pointed his weapon at Mr. Hernandez, and threatened his life.”   Chief Balon says the department was not apprised of this incident by Hernandez, as they learned

Michigan City Police Department swears in new probationary officers

The Michigan City Police Department swore in three new probationary officers on Tuesday. The probationary officers had undergone an extensive hiring process which began with over 25 potential candidates. The probationary officers will endure six weeks of in-house training with the Division of Professional Standards. Upon completion of the training, they will begin the Field Training Officer Program where they will be working within the community with their respective training officers until spaces are available for them to attend the 15-week Indiana Law Enforcement Academy Basic Course. Indiana Department of Health weekly COVID county levels update, numbers continue to improve

The Indiana Department of Health Wednesday updated its weekly COVID county metric scores.  LaPorte, Porter, St. Joseph and Starke counties have moved down from a score of 2.5 to a score of 1. Porter and Newton counties have moved down from a score of 2.5, to a score of 1.5. Lake County has moved from a score of 1.5 to a score of 1. FDA Releasing Reports of Infant Formula Causing Infections

The FDA, along with CDC and state and local partners are investigating four consumer complaints of infant illness related to products from Abbott Nutrition’s Sturgis, MI facility received from 9/20/2021 to 1/11/2022. All of the cases are reported to have consumed powdered infant formula (IF) produced from Abbott Nutrition’s Sturgis, MI facility. These complaints include three reports of Cronobacter sakazakii infections and one report of Salmonella Newport infection in infants. All four cases related to these complaints were hospitalized and Cronobacter may have contributed to a death in one case. FDA has initiated an onsite inspection at the facility.
