Update: Michigan City Police announce arrest made in armed robberies of Wendy’s and Burger King 

The Michigan City Police Department announced Friday that  an arrest was made in the case of two armed robberies that recently occurred at Wendy’s and Burger King in Michigan City.   On Sept. 28, an officer located a dark SUV matching the suspect vehicle used in the Burger King robbery, near the old Marquette theatre.  A traffic stop was performed, and the driver was identified as 59-year-old Michigan City resident Vincer Lee Mitchell. Detectives from the Investigative Division were in the area and came to assist. A search was conducted of the SUV and officers “located evidence connected with both robberies.”

Statewide Silver Alert for two Mishawaka girls

A Statewide Silver Alert has been declared for two Mishawaka girls.  The Mishawaka Police Department is investigating the disappearance of Lilli Davis, described as a 14-year-old black female, 5 feet 2 inches tall, 125 pounds, brown hair with brown eyes, last seen wearing blue jeans with a hole in the knee and gray Nike Jordans, and Ashley Taulbee, described as a 16-year-old white female, 5 feet 4 inches tall, 140 pounds, blond hair with green eyes, last seen wearing a blue tie-dye shirt, black and gray jogger pants and black tennis shoes. Lane and ramp closures for I-80/94 in Lake County

In Lake County, there will be overnight lane closures between mile marker 2 and 5 (Kennedy Ave).  The schedule is subject to change but is currently as follows: On the evenings of October 1 and October 2, one left lane of westbound I-80/94 will be closed and two left lanes of eastbound I-80/94 will be closed (one lane after 8 p.m., two lanes after 10 p.m.).  On the evening of October 4, three left lanes of eastbound I-80/94 will be closed (one lane after 8 p.m., two lanes after 10 p.m. and three lanes after 3 a.m.). Holcomb renews COVID-19 public health emergency declaration

Indiana Governor Eric Holcomb renewed the state’s public health emergency declaration on Thursday. This is the 19th renewal of the COVID-19 public health emergency.  The executive order mentions that “the virus remains a threat to the health, safety and welfare of all residents of Indiana such that emergency conditions continue to exist, and efforts are needed to continue to address, control and reduce the threat posed by COVID-19.” The full executive order can be found on the State of Indiana executive orders page.

Bethany Church Servants Honored with Good Scout Awards

Summer’s end brought community recognition to the heart of Indiana as Pastor Dennis Meyer and Outreach Director Carey Garwood of Bethany Lutheran Church were honored with Good Scout Awards from the local LaSalle Council, Boy Scouts of America. CAPTRUST boosts Franciscan Health Michigan City backpack project

A $1,000 grant from CAPTRUST Community Foundation helped support the Franciscan Health Michigan City backpack project to provide a positive start to the school year for local students. The funds were part of the effort supported by the hospital medical staff and the Franciscan Health Foundation to provide 500 backpacks for Michigan City Area Schools and 100 backpacks for local Catholic elementary schools. Indiana State Department of Health COVID county advisory levels updated

The Indiana State Department of health updated their weekly COVID county advisory level map on Wednesday. Beach waters reopened at Indiana Dunes National Park 

The National Park Service says it has reopened the waters of all beaches at Indiana Dunes National Park. Northwest Health breaks ground on new location in Michigan City

Northwest Health is adding a new Northwest Medical Group location in La Porte County. The organization broke ground earlier this month at 6923 W. 400 North in Michigan City. NIPSCO seeks natural gas rate adjustment to advance safety and reliability of its natural gas system

On Wednesday, NIPSCO submitted a request with the Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission (IURC) to adjust its base natural gas rates. NIPSCO sys the proposed increase will undergo a thorough regulatory review process, including the opportunity for public input. South Shore line Information for Notre Dame and Bears games this weekend

This Saturday on the South Shore Line, South Bend Transpo will offer free shuttle bus service between the South Bend International Airport and Notre Dame Stadium for select trains. Eastbound Train 503 arrives at the South Bend Airport at 12:10 p.m. ET. Passengers may then board a Transpo shuttle, which will drop off near the Eck Visitors Center/Bookstore on campus. State Troopers involved in three pursuits within five hours

Indiana State Police Lowell Troopers were involved in three vehicle pursuits in just 5 hours Monday. The first took place in Hammond just after 1:00 p.m., when a member of the All Crimes Policing Team attempted to stop a Ford Fusion for several traffic violations.  The pursuit was terminated around Parrish and 165th Street when the officers lost sight of the vehicle.  A search of the area resulted in officers locating the vehicle parked in a nearby apartment complex.  The vehicle was impounded. Overnight lane closures – I-94 in Porter County

In Porter County, the two left lanes of eastbound and westbound I-94 will be closed between State Road 249 and State Road 149 (MM 19-22) from approximately 7 p.m. Wednesday, to 6 a.m. Thursday. Stuff a Bus results from over the weekend

The 2021 Stuff A Bus effort secured great results for the MC Salvation Army food pantry. Resulting in 9,480 pounds of donated non-perishable food/hygiene items, 519 meat vouchers (valued at $5 each), and $309.10 in cash donations. Police investigating armed robberies in Michigan City

Michigan City Police are investigating two armed robberies that occurred on Saturday and Monday.  On Sept. 25, at around 9 p.m. Michigan City Police Department was dispatched to Wendy’s located on Franklin St in reference to an armed robbery in progress. Officers responded to the area immediately and spoke to witnesses involved. Preliminary investigation indicated that the suspect had entered Wendy’s with a firearm demanding money from employees and fled on foot prior to officer’s arrival. Fall Clean Up scheduled for this month in La Porte

Dates have been set for the City of La Porte’s Fall Clean Up, according to La Porte Mayor Tom Dermody. Running Monday, Oct. 18 through Friday, Oct. 22, city residents will be able to discard their large and heavy trash.
