La Porte announces plans to reopen City Hall June 1

After just over a year, La Porte City Hall will once again open its doors to the public, according to Mayor Tom Dermody. Beginning June 1, following discussions with City Council members and the city department heads, residents will be permitted to enter as long as they wear a mask. The building closed to the public in March of 2020 as the coronavirus pandemic began to ramp up. Dermody said it remained closed for the last several months to protect both residents and city employees. FATAL CRASH UPDATE – MISHAWAKA MAN CHARGED AND ARRESTED

On November 20, 2020, at 4:32 PM, deputies were dispatched to US 20 and CR 200 East, reference a personal injury crash. The crash involved four (4) vehicles resulting in several being injured. One of the drivers, Brian E. KLINGERMAN (62 YOA) of Bremen, Indiana, was transported from the scene to a regional hospital for treatment. KLINGERMAN later died at the hospital as a result of his injuries sustained in the crash. The initial investigation determined Arthur C. MCNEELEY (61 YOA) of Mishawaka caused the crash by rear-ending an eastbound US 20 vehicle. Following the impact, MCNEELEY’S vehicle drove left

Purdue to welcome largest-ever incoming class this fall

The demand for a Purdue University education remains higher than ever as the university expects to welcome, for the second year in a row, its largest ever incoming class for the fall of 2021. More than 10,000 freshmen, which would be the largest class in any Big Ten school since at least 2005, are expected to arrive on campus for in-person learning this fall, with increases of both Indiana and out-of-state residents. WARMER WEATHER BRINGS INCREASED RISK OF TICK-BORNE DISEASE

Indiana health officials are urging Hoosiers to protect themselves from tick bites while outdoors as warmer weather increases tick activity. Indiana Department of Health entomologists have found the black-legged tick, which can carry pathogens that cause Lyme disease, babesiosis and other diseases, in all but three Indiana counties. Lyme disease bacteria have been detected in adult and immature black-legged ticks in many Indiana counties, especially in the northwest and west central parts of the state, where the largest numbers of human Lyme disease cases are reported. HOOSIERS AGE 12 AND OLDER CAN RECEIVE COVID-19 VACCINE BEGINNING THURSDAY MORNING AT CLINICS STATEWIDE

The Indiana Department of Health announced today that Hoosiers age 12 and older can begin receiving a free COVID-19 vaccine at 8 a.m. Thursday. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices recommended the use of the Pfizer vaccine for this new age group on Wednesday following the FDA’s expansion of the vaccine’s Emergency Use Authorization. Dr. Deausy was disappointed to learn of the of Indiana Legislator’s decision to override Governor Holcomb’s veto of Senate Enrolled Act No. 005. Dr. Deausy feels this is a dangerous move which will prevent local health departments from responding to health emergencies. Local health officers and their departments must often make immediate, urgent, and complex decisions to protect public health. This bill ultimately limits the ability of the health officers to make timely decisions during a public health emergency such as the coronavirus pandemic. Johnson Rd to be closed over I-94

The Indiana Department of Transportation announces a road closure for Johnson Rd over I-94 beginning Wednesday, May 19.   The road will be closed for approximately two weeks for a bridge deck sealing project. On May 11, Gov. Eric Holcomb reinstated work-search activities requiring that unemployment insurance claimants actively seek employment and be available for work. To be eligible for unemployment benefits, claimants must attempt to secure full-time work in each week they claim benefits. That requirement was suspended during the pandemic. TWO SUBJECTS ARRESTED AFTER SEARCH WARRANT FOR RESIDENCE

In the afternoon hours of May 6th, 2021, members of the LaPorte County Drug Task Force, a HIDTA Initiative, The Fugitive Apprehension Street Team (FAST), and The Michigan City Police Department effected 2 arrests as the result of a search warrant that was executed at the Ramada Inn Hotel. Taken into custody were 33-year-old Michigan City Resident Robert Rosenbourgh and 43-year-old Michigan City resident Trinity Hawkins. Parasite detected in wild swans in Lake County

Wildlife officials have confirmed the presence of a parasitic flatworm in wild swans from Wolf Lake. Diagnostic testing was conducted at the U.S. Geological Survey’s (USGS) National Wildlife Health Center in Madison, Wisconsin. Mute swans examined by the USGS had fatal infections of the intestinal parasite Sphaeridiotrema globulus. This parasite causes death in many species of waterfowl, including swans, diving ducks, and coots. Lead testing was also performed on the swans, and results were within the range of nontoxic background levels. The cause of death of the Canada geese collected from the same area could not be determined, despite extensive testing. The geese tested negative
