The City of La Porte is informing residents that large/heavy trash pick-up with WM is taking place next month. The clean up will run Monday, Oct. 6 through Friday, Oct. 10, and will take place on your regular trash day. In the Town of Porter, Carlson Corners will be closed to through-traffic for a stormwater project, beginning on Thursday, Sept. 4, the Town of Chesterton announced. The three residents on Carlson Corners will have access to their homes during construction. Sewer pipe will be installed on the south side of Carlson Corners from Mineral Springs Road to the Peterson Ditch on Pearson Road. “This will require complete daily closures of Carlson Corners while the project is underway,” the Town of Porter said. Just after 6 o’clock on Monday, September 1, 2025 Liberty Township firefighters were sent to Long Lake in lower Liberty Township for a missing male subject on the lake. Chiefs Brian Duncan and Michael Wineland arrived on scene and started investigating to gather information to assist water rescuers in being able to locate the subject quickly. The male subject was reported last seen approximately 100 feet off the West shoreline, just out from the lily pads that hugged the shore. Porter County Dive Team members quickly deployed a rescue boat and rescuers in the water in search of the man.

On Sunday, August 31, 2025, at approximately 7:58 p.m., Chesterton Police Officers were dispatched to the 1000 block of S. 23rd Street for a welfare check involving a 29-year-old Valparaiso man who was reported to be suicidal and armed with a handgun. The report was made after the man’s girlfriend fled her residence with her two children. Upon officer’s arrival, the male subject had already left the scene. In La Porte County, an INDOT contractor will conduct alternating lane closures on U.S. 20 between State Road 39 and Fail Road beginning on or after Tuesday, Sept. 2. Work will begin with the eastbound lanes converted to two-way traffic and westbound lanes closed. No left turns will be allowed through the work zone. SOUTH BEND – Rachael Robinson, 37 years old, of South Bend, Indiana, was sentenced by United States District Court Judge Damon R. Leichty after pleading guilty to a federal felony for wire fraud, announced Acting United States Attorney M. Scott Proctor. Robinson was ordered to pay $55, 280.47 in restitution to the victims of the offense. According to documents in the case, in February and April 2021, Robinson submitted two fraudulent applications for Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) relief funds for a business that did not exist.
