Wolf Gym closed this week at YMCA Elston Branch

At the YMCA Elston Branch in Michigan City, the Wolf Gym will be temporarily closed this week due to the floors being redone. It will reopen on Monday June 10. The YMCA is asking the public to use Meer Gym.

I-94 traffic configurations to change for bridge work

Indiana Department of Transportation contractor Dunnet Bay Construction Company will move to the next phases of bridge deck overlay preventative maintenance work on I-94 eastbound and westbound near U.S. 41/Indianapolis Blvd and Kennedy Ave on or after Thursday, June 6. Motorists should be prepared for overnight lane closures to install the new traffic configurations. Starting on or around June 6, westbound I-94 will have two lanes of traffic to the left of the work zone and two lanes of traffic to the right. Traffic on eastbound I-94 will be shifted to the right with the work zone to the left.

Franciscan Health hosting free Coping with Chemo Brain webinar

Franciscan Health is hosting a free, live webinar aimed at increasing understanding of the mental side effects of chemotherapy treatment for cancer patients while teaching strategies for managing them. The Coping with Chemo Brain webinar will take place at 5:30 p.m. Central/6:30 p.m. Eastern on Wednesday, June 26. Franciscan Health speech language pathologist Darcy Hughes and occupational therapist Bridget Kress will share signs and symptoms to watch for while teaching techniques for coping with changes to memory, concentration and focus during and after chemotherapy. MCPD, MCFD, and LaPorte County EMS to Host Free Emergency Situation Classes

The Michigan City Police Department, Michigan City Fire Department and LaPorte County EMS will host free classes each week in June to teach residents how to handle emergency situations. The series, dubbed “Michigan City Safe Citizens,” will be every Thursday in June from 4:30- 6:30 p.m. at the MCPD, 1201 E. Mobile Food Distribution Wednesday June 12th at the La Porte County Fairgrounds

There will be a Mobile Food Distribution on Wednesday, June 12, 10:00 am - 12:00 noon at The LaPorte County Fairgrounds in LaPorte. Perishable and dry goods will be offered, FREE of charge. All items are pre-boxed/bagged. First come, first served while supplies last, up to 300 households. One box per household. This event is for those in need of food assistance. Must be present!  This is a drive-thru distribution. Please remain in your vehicle, and pop open your trunk to receive grocery items.

La Porte County Public Libray kicks off their Summer Reading Program DINO style on Saturday with TEAM WIMS

Fonda Owens, Toni Kester, and the La Porte County Public Library  kicked off the Summer of 2024 at the WIFI Garden outside at the La Porte County Public Library. Familes and Children gathered to register for Summer Reading, along with fun from "Lori" the Dinosaur. Fun was had by all with the Story Walk, fossil findings, sand digs, crafts, fun and so much more. TEAM WIMS was out there LIVE to help kick in the fun. Route No. 4 bus service altered to accommodate Wabash closure in Michigan City

The following is a statement from the City of Michigan City regarding Route No. 4 bus service being altered: Michigan City Transit has re-routed Route No. 4 to accommodate for the temporary one-way closure of Wabash Street. Under normal circumstances, bus service along Route No. 4 runs from Eighth Street to Wabash Street to Barker Avenue to Ohio Street. But until Wabash returns to continuous two-way traffic in August, southbound travel along Route No. 4 will be from Eighth Street to Ohio Street, and then picks up its regularly scheduled route at Ohio Street and Barker Avenue.

Missing Bobcat found safe

MICHIGAN CITY, Ind. -- The 9-month-old bobcat named Grace that escaped from Washington Park Zoo, is officially back home safe and sound, according to the City of Michigan City. The city says she was peacefully captured near the Guy Foreman Amphitheater in Washington Park Thursday evening. The city thanks everyone who shared her photo and kept a watchful eye.

Coolspring Avenue and Cleveland Avenue 4-way stop addition / Tilden and Coolspring stop sign removal

MICHIGAN CITY, IN – At the Michigan City Board of Public Works and Safety meeting, it was determined to convert the intersection of Coolspring Avenue and Cleveland Avenue into a 4 way stop intersection. This change will take effect on July 1, 2024. In the meantime, the transition process will start by painting the necessary striping and preparing for the sign installation. With the addition of the stop signs on Coolspring Avenue at Cleveland Avenue, it has been decided to also remove the stop signs on Coolspring Avenue at Tilden Avenue. Community drug complaints lead to arrest in La Porte

A La Porte man was arrested Tuesday on drug charges after a search warrant was conducted, according to the La Porte County Drug Task Force. Police say that beginning in March 2024, they began receiving complaints regarding a residence located at the 200 block of A Street in La Porte. Shortly after, an investigation was opened and a search warrant was eventually obtained. On Tuesday, La Porte Police Department’s Emergency Response Team executed the search warrant at the residence and seized suspected methamphetamine, schedule 2 controlled substances, marijuana, U.S. currency and “numerous firearms.” Located inside the residence was 29-year-old Corey

State Road 912 southbound ramp closure to switch

LAKE COUNTY, Ind. - An Indiana Department of Transportation contractor will change ramp closures at State Road 912/Cline Avenue and I-94 beginning on or after Friday, May 31. For the next phase of work, the ramp from southbound State Road 912 to westbound I-94 will reopen, and the ramp from southbound State Road 912 to eastbound I-94 will close through late August. The detour for the southbound State Road 912 ramp to eastbound I-94 will follow U.S. 12/20 and State Road 53/Broadway. Celebrate Indiana’s Free Fishing Days June 1-2 by taking your family and friends fishing. On Free Fishing Days, Indiana residents do not need a fishing license or a trout/salmon stamp to fish the state’s public waters. All other rules such as seasons, bag limits, and size limits apply.
