MICHIGAN CITY, Ind. – The City of Michigan City is providing an update on winter weather operations as cold temperatures and regional supply challenges continue to affect Northwest Indiana. Michigan City continues to actively manage its winter operations while following established protocols for roadway treatment and snow response. Like many communities across the region, the City is experiencing the impacts of a broader winter salt shortage. Busy Winter Storm Keeps Liberty Township Firefighters Responding to Fires, Crashes, and Emergencies Liberty Township – Firefighters were dispatched to a structure fire in the 800 block of Canyon Drive in Jackson Township on Sunday, January 25, 2026, at approximately 11:30 a.m. After receiving updates that two vehicles were on fire in an attached garage, Lieutenant Paul McKeague requested a First Alarm assignment and the activation of a Tanker Plan. The La Porte Slicers doubled up on Michigan City Monday night in a varsity doubleheader. The Slicer girls easily defeated the lady Wolves 63-31 while the boys game was the definition of a barn burner. While La Porte lead throughout the game City stuck close and did not back down. Only three points separated the teams as the clock hit zero. Venezuelan National Sentenced to 30 Months in Prison-For Unlawful Possession of a Firearm SOUTH BEND – Guillermo Zarate-Martinez, 29 years old, of Venezuela, residing in Chicago, Illinois, was sentenced by United States District Court Judge Damon R. Leichty after pleading guilty to unlawful possession of a firearm by an illegal alien, announced United States Attorney Adam L. Mildred. Zarate-Martinez was sentenced to 30 months in prison. Coast Guard Cutters Mackinaw (WLBB 30) and Neah Bay (WTGB 105) conducted ice-breaking operations to free, assist, and escort vessels transiting the Great Lakes on Jan. 21, 2026. The Mackinaw freed and escorted the Wilfred Sykes, a 678-foot motor vessel beset by ice on Lake Huron, and the Neah Bay directly assisted the American Spirit, a 1,004-foot motor vessel icebound on Lake Erie. Both of these missions are direct results of Great Lakes District ice-breaking operations Operation Taconite and Operation Coal Shovel.
