South Shore Line operating weekend / holiday schedule on Labor Day

The South Shore Line will operate a weekend/holiday train schedule in observance of Labor Day, Monday, Sept. 5. Due to ongoing holiday events, the following alcohol restrictions will be in place: · Friday, Sept. 2: Alcohol is prohibited on all trains after 7 p.m. · Saturday, Sunday, and Monday, Sept. 3-5: Alcohol is prohibited on all trains. Glass bottles are prohibited at all times. The Millennium Station ticket office will be open from 9:35 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Monday; all other ticket offices will be closed. Roadwork crews shutting down westbound right lanes of I-80/94 Tuesday night in Lake County

LAKE COUNTY– Tuesday roadwork crews are shutting down the westbound right lanes of I-80/94 from mile marker 6.5 to mile marker 0 in the evening/overnight hours. Construction is moving into a new phase. Once the change is made the on-ramps at Calumet Avenue and Indianapolis Boulevard will be reopened.

South Shore Line (NICTD) provides update on Double Track NWI Project construction

The following is a construction update for the South Shore Line NWI project: GARY- MILLER STATION AREA All buildings have been demolished for the construction of the station and parking lots in Miller. Work is underway at the new east lot. Parking is available but temporarily restricted while work near Miller Station progresses. Vehicular and pedestrian access from Melton Road (US 20) is closed, the driveway from Old US 12/Dunes Hwy will remain open with some lane restrictions. Construction activities may occur on the shoulder of Old US 12/Dunes Hwy.  Construction of the new Miller Station began in August at the southwest corner of Lake Street

Michigan City High School to host Semi-State for boys basketball


Michigan City High School has been named a host site for both the regional and semi-state rounds of the 2022-23 Indiana High School Athletic Association (IHSAA) Boys Basketball Tournament. This year’s tournament will be the 113th of its kind. With sectional rounds scheduled to take place at many schools throughout the state, Michigan City will host the games that qualify the top 16, 8, 4, and 2 teams in Indiana. The regional competition at MCHS is scheduled for March 11; the semi-state contest will be held March 18. The semi-state champion will go on to represent the northern half of

Holcomb signs executive order to minimize disruption of fuel supply following refinery fire

Governor Eric Holcomb on Monday signed an executive order, suspending certain regulations in order to minimize the disruption of adequate fuel supply to Hoosiers and motorists in surrounding states after an electrical fire at the BP Whiting refinery on Aug. 24, which caused it to shut down production. The order temporarily waives regulations regarding vapor pressure requirements on fuel standards and lifts restrictions on hours of service relating to motor carriers and drivers transporting fuels. The temporary suspensions are meant to expedite the refining and transporting of fuel through Indiana. The refinery provided up to 25 percent of the refined

Franciscan Health Michigan City to host two COVID-19 vaccination clinics

Franciscan Health Michigan City is hosting two COVID-19 vaccine clinics in an effort to increase education and vaccination rates in underserved communities. The clinics will take place from 12 to 2 p.m. on Sept. 1 at the Michigan City Public Library, 100 E. 4th St., and from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Sept. 9 at Pleasant Hill Ministries, 715 E. 10th St. Pfizer first and second vaccines and booster shots will be available for ages 5 and older. Fatal Motorcycle Accident in Michigan City

The LaPorte County E-911 Regional Dispatch Center received a 911 call on August 27, 2022, at approximately 5:50am regarding a motorcycle accident. Officers from Uniform Patrol Shift 3 were dispatched to the 700 Block of Cleveland Avenue regarding this incident. Upon arriving, officers discovered that a motorcycle had left the roadway and two subjects had suffered traumatic injuries. Both subjects were pronounced deceased at the scene by LaPorte County EMS. The Michigan City Police Department Traffic Division was called in to assist with the investigation. Indiana Dunes Volunteer and Porter Resident Receives National Award  

The staff of Indiana Dunes National Park is pleased to announce that one of the park’s volunteers, Rob Albrecht-Mallinger, is the national recipient of the National Park Service’s George and Helen Hartzog Award for Outstanding Volunteer Service. This award recognizes and honors the efforts of exceptional "Volunteers In Parks," or VIPs. UPDATE on a story WIMS has been following-La Porte Fire Department fights storage unit blaze

La PORTE, IN (Aug. 26, 2022) – City of La Porte firefighters were working into the early hours Thursday morning after a fire broke out at a local storage facility. Firefighters were dispatched at approximately 8:30 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 25 to Infinite Self Storage, located off West 18th Street in La Porte. Due to the severity of the blaze, an all-shift page was issued, calling in additional department personnel. Center Township Volunteer Fire Department also responded to the scene to offer assistance. La Porte County Council Seeks to Fill Economic Development Commission Vacancy

On Monday August 22, at the regularly scheduled County Council Meeting, it was announced that the Council is seeking a resident of LaPorte County to serve on the LaPorte County Economic Development Commission.  The Economic Development Commission or EDC is charged with reviewing requests for Industrial Revenue Bond financing, State of Indiana tax exempt facility bonds, retail property tax abatements and other allowable items under the statute that regulates the body (IC 36-7-12-5). Shared roadway bicycle markings painted along some streets in La Porte

The La Porte Park and Recreation Department announced that sharrows were painted along certain streets last week. Sharrows are shared roadway bicycle markings used to assist people riding bicycles with positioning on the road and to alert other roadway users of people riding bicycles in the roadway. The Park Department gave a special thanks to the Unity Foundation of La Porte County for its support in funding assistance to complete the City to Shore Bikeability Project. The City was able to paint 26 total sharrows along the route. The City to Shore Bicycle Route is a 1.66-mile on-street bicycle route

$40,000 of school supplies delivered to Marsh Elementary 

Marsh Elementary is thanking Enchanted Backpack for the large donation of supplies that were delivered to the school Thursday. Marsh received about $40,000 in items including classroom supplies, shoes, coats, books, and more.  Marsh also thanked the Michigan City Police Department volunteers who helped unload the donation.

Multiple beach hazards statements for dangerous swimming conditions on Lake Michigan 

A beach hazards statement remains in effect from 4 a.m. CDT Friday through late Friday night for LaPorte and Berrien counties.  This is for high wave action, strong currents, and dangerous swimming conditions expected. Piers will be heavily swamped by waves. North winds will be 10 to 20 mph. Waves will be 3 to 5 feet Friday, subsiding late Friday night. Strong currents can pull swimmers into deeper water and high waves can sweep people off piers. The National Weather Service says to remain out of the water to avoid hazardous swimming conditions and do not venture out on piers.

Hoosier Star celebrity judges introduced 

The La Porte County Symphony Orchestra’s (LCSO) Hoosier STAR is taking place Sept. 17 and will have three celebrity guest judges. Dr. Carolyn Watson of the LCSO will be at the helm leading the orchestra as they accompany the contestants. Grammy nominated Music Director of the South Bend Symphony Orchestra, Alastair Willis, will still be there again for Hoosier STAR 2022, though with a bit of a twist: Willis is returning as a celebrity judge. Gov. Holcomb-led delegation concludes Taiwan visit

Governor Eric Holcomb concluded an economic development trip to Taipei Wednesday, fostering economic and academic ties between Indiana and Taiwan. West Nile Virus cases reported in Porter County

The Indiana Department of Health detected two pools of mosquitoes that tested positive for West Nile Virus from samples collected on Aug 18. The Porter County Health Department says residents should take precautions when going outside. Precautions such as eliminating standing water around, practicing bit prevention using EPA-registered insect repellent, wearing long sleeves, and avoid going outside during peak feeding at dusk and dawn. Indiana Department of Education launches statewide math and english/language arts tutoring grant program

The Indiana Department of Education (IDOE) Wednesday announced the launch of Indiana Learns, a statewide grant program that will provide qualifying families with up to $1,000 to spend on math and English/language arts high-dosage tutoring and approved out-of-school academic programs for their students. The initiative’s goal is to increase access to effective, out-of-school academic support to help students recover from learning disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. Earlier this year, Governor Holcomb signed House Enrolled Act 1251 to create a microgrant program for families that could provide additional learning support for students most impacted academically by the COVID-19 pandemic.
