Michigan City Police Department teams with the Drug Enforcement Administration for National Prescription Drug Take Back Day

On Saturday, April 26, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. the Michigan City Police Department and the Drug Enforcement Administration will host DEA’s National Prescription Drug Take Back Day at locations across the country. DEA and its partners will collect tablets, capsules, patches, and other solid forms of prescription drugs. For more than a decade, the event has helped Americans easily rid their homes of unneeded medications—those that are old, unwanted, or expired—that too often become a gateway to addiction. NIPSCO And the NiSource Charitable Foundation Announce 2025 Environmental Action Grant Recipients

Northern Indiana Public Service Company LLC (NIPSCO) and the NiSource Charitable Foundation today announced the winners of its 2025 Environmental Action Grant. The annual grant program awarded 23 local nonprofit organizations to help fund environmental projects and programming across NIPSCO’s service area. Now in its 10th year, the grant program has provided about $700,000 in funding support for nearly 170 projects with an emphasis on environmental education and restoration across northern Indiana. State Road 249 to have lane closures

Indiana Department of Transportation contractor Superior Construction Co Inc will have lane closures on State Road 249 between I-94 and U.S. 12 beginning on or after Monday, April 28. State Road 249 will have alternating lane closures through October for a bridge deck overlay preventative maintenance project over the Little Calumet River. During phase one, the inside left lanes will be closed in each direction. INDOT encourages drivers to allow extra time when driving through this area and follow traffic directions carefully. Motorists should slow down, exercise caution and drive distraction-free through all work zones.

Town of Chesterton celebrating Arbor day with projects

The Town of Chesterton will celebrate Arbor Day on Saturday, April 26, with a number of projects, Park Superintendent Tyler McLead told the Town Council at Monday’s meeting. “It’ll be a busy day for us,” he said. At 12:45 AM Wednesday morning, Deputy Julian Sanchez was in the area of US 20 and CR 600 West. He observed a passenger vehicle with a license plate violation traveling west on US 20. The vehicle merged onto SR 212 and began to travel north. A traffic stop was initiated in the parking lot of a service station located at the intersection of SR 212 and Tryon Road. The driver was identified as 36-year-old Hassan N. MALLEY of Beverly Shores. A database check revealed MALLEY is wanted (Failure to Appear) by authorities in Wisconsin. Three CHS athletes named to Indiana High School Award Watchlist Congratulations to CHS senior Kieran Barnewall, sophomore Sammi Boster, and junior Rob Czarniecki on being named to the Indiana High School Award Watchlist. This year the live show, honoring Hoosier athletes from around the state, will be held on Sunday, April 27, at Clowe Memorial Hall at Butler University. Barnewall is a standout on the track team; Boster on the gymnastics team; and Czarniecki on the baseball team.

MCHS high school Football team volunteering at Nest and Keys to Hope Garden

The Michigan City High School Boys football team and coach Cody French will once again volunteer in the community. On April 25 from 3:30 p.m. – 5 p.m. the MCHS football team will assist in the Keys to Hope Garden and at the The Nest Shelter on 8th Street. The students will be filling their raised garden beds with soil in preparation for our planting day in May. The Sand Castle Shelter is located at 1005 W 8th Street in Michigan City.

Pro Football Hall of Famer, Chicago Bear, Pro Wrestler Steve "MONGO" McMichael passed away on Wednesday from complications of ALS, according to The New York Times. He was 67 years old. Two Arrested and One Injured in Juvenile Gun Incident

On April 21, 2025, at approximately 1:07pm, the Laporte County Regional Dispatch Center received a 911 call indicating a person had suffered a gunshot wound to the head, at a residence in the 300 block of Edwards Street. Uniform Patrol Shift I Officers, Cpl. Brian Wright, Ryan Koontz, Kane Fletcher, Cody Washluske and Louis Gallegos responded to the scene as did Laporte County EMS and the Michigan City Fire Department. The initial investigation determined three local juvenile males, ages 15,17 and 17, were at the Edwards Street residence. They were in possession of two handguns that one of the juveniles
