Liberty Township Volunteer Fire Department partnered with Rebuilding Together Duneland on Saturday, April 26th to install smoke detectors in homes in their service area. Volunteer Firefighters spent their morning installing smoke detectors in homes that were being worked on by volunteers with Rebuilding Together Duneland. The purpose of this project is to help rehabilitate communities and homes of neighbors in need, focusing strongly on older people, persons with disabilities and those with children. The fire department’s mission is to help ensure families have access to working smoke detectors to make homes safer. This effort is part of an ongoing collaboration

The Indiana Sheriffs’ Association (ISA) announces information for their 45th Annual Youth Leadership Camps this year. The first session, serving the southern part of the state, will be held June 16 - 18, at the Indiana FFA Leadership Camp in Trafalgar (Johnson County). The second session, serving the northern part of the state, will be held June 23 - 25, at Pine Creek Camp in Pine Village (Warren County). Indiana Department of Transportation contractor Dunnet Bay Construction Company will begin a bridge deck overlay preventative maintenance project on State Road 49 over the Indiana Toll Road beginning on or after Tuesday, April 29. This project will be ongoing through late September, with three phases of construction and lane shifts in both directions. Southbound State Road 49 will maintain two travel lanes, but northbound will be reduced to one lane during the first two phases of construction. Motorists should be alert for changing traffic patterns in the area. INDOT encourages drivers to allow extra time when driving through this area

The Northern Indiana Commuter Transportation District (NICTD) will hold a 30-day public comment period including a series of in person public hearings to gather comments on a proposed across the board fare increase of 10% rounded to the nearest quarter ($0.25). If approved, the new fares would take effect on July 1, 2025, for the South Shore Line rail passenger service including July monthly tickets. The new fares would apply to all stations. Northern Indiana Public Service Company LLC (NIPSCO) and the NiSource Charitable Foundation today announced the winners of its 2025 Environmental Action Grant. The annual grant program awarded 23 local nonprofit organizations to help fund environmental projects and programming across NIPSCO’s service area. Now in its 10th year, the grant program has provided about $700,000 in funding support for nearly 170 projects with an emphasis on environmental education and restoration across northern Indiana. Indiana Department of Transportation contractor Superior Construction Co Inc will have lane closures on State Road 249 between I-94 and U.S. 12 beginning on or after Monday, April 28. State Road 249 will have alternating lane closures through October for a bridge deck overlay preventative maintenance project over the Little Calumet River. During phase one, the inside left lanes will be closed in each direction. INDOT encourages drivers to allow extra time when driving through this area and follow traffic directions carefully. Motorists should slow down, exercise caution and drive distraction-free through all work zones.

The Town of Chesterton will celebrate Arbor Day on Saturday, April 26, with a number of projects, Park Superintendent Tyler McLead told the Town Council at Monday’s meeting. “It’ll be a busy day for us,” he said.
