Liberty Township Firefighters were busy late afternoon on ecember 30, 2022 answering calls. Motorists may have xperienced temporary road closures on U.S. Highway 6 between county road 75 West and 200 West on Route 6 for a period of time as crews worked a three-vehicle crash. A driver from one vehicle was transported for knee and leg injury as another was transported for a minor head injury. The driver of the third vehicle escaped unharmed and was not transported. All the involved vehicles became disabled as a result from the crash and required being towed from the scene. One vehicle

The Franciscan Health Michigan City medical staff is accepting scholarship applications through March 1 from LaPorte County high school seniors interested in healthcare careers. The medical staff at Franciscan Health Michigan City voted unanimously in 2021 to establish and fund a scholarship honoring the memories and continuing legacies of physicians who served the community as members of the medical staff. The scholarship of up to $5,000 is funded by physicians on the Franciscan Health Michigan City medical staff in partnership with the Franciscan Health Foundation. The City of Valparaiso is releasing the City’s new recycling collection schedule for 2023. On Sept. 12, the City of Valparaiso’s Common Council adopted new recycling collection rates, charges and guidelines for the City’s recycling customers. Part of this amended ordinance included changing the residential recycling collection frequency from once per week to once every two weeks. “We learned that most recycling bins were being set out at the curb far less than full for weekly pickups. Congressman Frank J. Mrvan has announced that over $20 million in Community Project Funding requests have been included in the final Fiscal Year 2023 appropriations package. The past few days presented challenging travel for motorists that chose to drive in conditions that were often treacherous at best. The Chesterton Police Department is investigating a fatal accident this morning, Tuesday, Dec. 27, at the intersection of Ind. 49 and Indian Boundary Road. Porter County Coroner Cyndi Dykes has not yet released the name of the victim, pending notification of the family. According to the CPD, at approximately 11 a.m. the deceased—the sole occupant of a Chevrolet passenger vehicle—was southbound on Ind. 49 and rear-ended a semi-tractor trailer stopped in traffic just north of Indian Boundary Road. “The driver of the Chevrolet was not ejected from the vehicle but was pronounced deceased at the scene,” the CPD said. The 2022 calendar year has been a good one for the LPUEA, with many different board-supported projects having taken place.
