Lowell Trooper makes 3 drug arrests Monday

PORTER COUNTY – An Indiana State Police Trooper from the Lowell Post made three drug arrests durring his shift on Monday, according to the ISP. At around 7:45 a.m., the trooper initiated a traffic stop along I-94 at the 26.8 mile-marker on a VW Jetta for several traffic violations. This location is just east of the S.R. 49 exit ramp in Chesterton.  During the traffic stop investigation, a search of the trunk revealed 1.9 pounds of cocaine that had been concealed in a duffel bag. Both the driver and passenger were arrested and charged with dealing in cocaine.  The driver

Portion of Central Avenue to close for several months in Portage

In Portage, beginning Wednesday, June 14 until at least Saturday, November 11, Central Avenue between Swanson Road and Willowdale Road will be closed to through traffic due to the reconstruction of the bridge as part of the Central Avenue West Project. Detours will be marked. Westbound through traffic will detour south on Willowcreek Road to Stone Avenue; west on Stone Avenue to Willowdale Road and north on Willowdale Road to Central Avenue Eastbound traffic will take the reverse route.

Update: Person of interest identified in Lake County Jail lobby fire

Sheriff Oscar Martinez Jr. announced Tuesday that investigators with the Lake County Sheriff’s Department have identified a person of interest in connection with the fire that occurred in the lobby of the Lake County Jail Monday. Martinez says officers are actively attempting to locate him. Police will provide an update as more information becomes available.

1 injured after vehicle hit by train in Berrien County

BERRIEN COUNTY, Mich. – One person sustained serious injuries after a train struck a vehicle in Berrien County on Tuesday. Just before 11:30 a.m., first responders were dispatched to the railroad crossing on Pardee Road near U.S. Highway 12 in Galien Township for a train vs. car crash. The Berrien County Sheriff Department says the vehicle was traveling south on Pardee Road and went around the activated railroad crossing arms and was hit by the train traveling west. Residents will have chance to own piece of the historic Civic Auditorium in La Porte

Police training taking place at Yost Elementary multiple days this week

In conjunction with the Duneland School Corporation, Porter Police Department will be hosting a multi-jurisdictional training at Yost Elementary School. Training will be conducted on Tuesday June 6, Wednesday June 7 and Thursday June 8. Porter Fire Department will also be conducting training in concert with other area fire departments. Update: Police investigating leads in Lake County Jail lobby fire

Lake County Sheriff’s Department police officers are investigating leads on a possible suspect in Monday's jail lobby fire, according to a Monday evening update by the department. No one was injured and there was no major damage. Police are seeking the public’s help in identifying a visitor who started a small fire at the Lake County Jail. Michigan City United States Bowling Congress Bowling Association donates to Franciscan Health Breast Care Center

Franciscan Health Breast Care Center Michigan City breast cancer patients will have additional support thanks to a generous donation from the Michigan City United States Bowling Congress Bowling Association.     The organization raised $16,735 at its February Bowl for the Cure fundraiser for the Michigan City through the Franciscan Health Foundation’s Michigan City Mammography Department/Breast Cancer Fund.     The donation is the largest to date from the annual event. Next Level Trails celebrates Schererville trail project

The Indiana Department of Natural Resources (DNR), Next Level Trails (NLT), the town of Schererville, and the Lake County Parks Department opened a newly completed segment of the Pennsy Greenway in Schererville on Wednesday. The asphalt multi-use trail extension will extend 2.33 miles connecting the existing Pennsy Greenway southeast from Rohrman Park to Clark Road. Of this trail extension, 1.5 miles are currently open, with an additional 0.83-mile section slated to be complete in June. The new trail will increase the total mileage of the Pennsy Greenway Trail to 12.5 miles, connecting Schererville with Crown Point, Munster, and Lansing, Illinois.

State Road 4 to be resurfaced between La Porte and Stillwell

In LaPorte County, an Indiana Department of Transportation contractor will begin a resurfacing project on State Road 4 between Boyd Boulevard and State Road 104 on or after Wednesday, June 7. State Road 4 will be reduced to one lane with flaggers directing traffic in the area where work is occurring. The project will be ongoing through late October. U.S. 31 road reconstruction moving to next phase in St. Joseph County

In St. Joseph County, an Indiana Department of Transportation contractor will move to the next phase of work at the U.S. 20/31 bypass and U.S. 31 interchange on or after Wednesday, June 7. U.S. 31 traffic will be switched to the newly constructed northbound lanes under the U.S. 20 bridge for two-way traffic on the northbound side. The southbound lanes will be closed for reconstruction. Wolf-dog hybrid at Washington Park Zoo diagnosed with bone cancer

Washington Park Zoo announced Tuesday that Oden, their eight-year-old wolf-dog hybrid, was diagnosed with invasive bone cancer. The zoo said he is under veterinary care to manage his pain and inflammation since there are not many options at this time for treatment. The zoo said Oden was diagnosed after they noticed a limp in his back leg, so the veterinary staff ran lab work and took x-rays to share with a radiologist who confirmed the news. “Other than the swelling in the leg he still does not appear to feel ill, and he is still in good spirits, so we
