Michigan City Police Department releases 2021 Uniform Crime Report

The Michigan City Police Department released its year-end totals for Uniform Crime Reporting (UCR). The UCR is a nationwide, cooperative statistical effort of more than 18,000 city, university and college, county, state, tribal and federal law enforcement agencies voluntarily reporting data on crimes brought to their attention.  Michigan City Police announces that Overall Crime Rate is up 0.10%.  Overall Calls for Service is down from 41,522 in 2020 to 37,355 in 2021, however MCPD has seen an increase in Reports Completed from 5,088 in to 5,767 in 2021.  Total Arrest made in 2021 also saw an increase to 1,963 (2021)

La Porte County Department of Health COVID Vaccine clinic to move locations

The La Porte County Department of Health has announced that beginning Wednesday, Feb. 23, the LPCHD COVID Vaccine clinic will be located at 901 Lincolnway, (Corner of Lincolnway and Madison) in La Porte.  Clinic hours will remain the same: Monday,Wednesday and Friday from 8 a.m-6 p.m. and Saturday 8 a.m.-3 p.m. The phone number is 219-326-6808 ext 7101. The current location is 1007 Lincolnway (old LaPorte Hospital Lobby).

Michigan City Government Buildings to re-open to public and allow boards/commissions to resume in-person meetings

Michigan City Mayor Duane Parry recently issued an Executive Order for Michigan City government buildings to re-open to the public and allow boards and commissions to resume in-person meetings.  Effective Tuesday, Feb. 22, Michigan City government buildings, including City Hall, will re-open to the general public without the necessity of advanced appointments.   Also, effective Monday, Feb. 28, all Michigan City Boards/Commissions may resume in-person meetings.

Three arrested after poaching incident in Newton County

Indiana Conservation Officers announced Thursday they have arrested three Chicago men on multiple wildlife violations. The arrests stem from an investigation that originated on the evening of Feb. 15, when conservation officers were contacted after witnesses reported shots coming from a vehicle illuminating a rural area with a spotlight. Shortly after the call, a Newton County Sheriff’s deputy observed a vehicle matching the suspected vehicle commit a traffic violation and conducted a traffic stop. Conservation Officer helps elderly couple in storm 

A conservation officer Thursday evening helped out an elderly couple who was lost and looking for Indiana Dunes State Park campground, according to Indiana DNR Law Enforcement. A District 10 Conservation Officer found an elderly couple in a camper van. They had decided the road conditions were too poor to continue their cross country trip to Georgia and left the interstate looking for the campground. Due to the weather conditions, the couple became lost until approached by the officer who led them to their campsite.

City of La Porte under snow emergency through Saturday evening

Mayor Tom Dermody of LaPorte has issued a snow emergency for the City of La Porte. The City of La Porte snow emergency is in effect through February 19, 2022, at 6:00 p.m. Parking is permitted on the odd side of the street from through 6 p.m. Friday. Matching gifts nourish Franciscan Health’s food insecurity effort

Franciscan Health says it will expand its effort to address food insecurity during the coming year, thanks to a matching gift challenge, which raised $100,000 for the Franciscan Health Foundation. Franciscan Health launched its drive to combat food insecurity plaguing Northwest Indiana, collaborating last year with the Food Bank of Northwest Indiana and the School City of Hammond to provide healthy food boxes for vulnerable families. To increase outreach, Mobile Food Markets serve an average of 100 families each month in the Franciscan Health Hammond hospital parking lot. Indiana Department of Health weekly COVID county advisory levels update

The Indiana Department of Health Wednesday updated its weekly COVID county advisory levels.  Currently in our area, LaPorte, Porter, St. Joseph and Starke counties are at a score of 2.5 orange level. Newton is also in an orange level with a score of 2.5. Lake and Jasper counties have a score of 1.5 in the yellow level.  Positivity rates are down in all of the local counties mentioned.  See more on the Indiana Department of Health COVID dashboard webpage.

Porter County Sheriff’s Office enforcing Frost Law Ordinance starting Monday

Lake County Sheriff’s Department: Teen allegedly assaulted mother, stole SUV and caused fatal crash

Officers from the Lake County Sheriff’s Department and Gary Police Department are investigating after a 15-year-old boy allegedly assaulted his mother, stole her SUV and caused a fatal crash Tuesday morning. At approximately 8:15 a.m., the Gary Police Department requested the Lake County Sheriff’s Department Crash Reconstruction Unit to respond to the scene of a two-vehicle crash with one fatality and one serious injury at E. 39th Avenue and Georgia Street in Gary. A winter storm watch is in effect from Thursday morning through Thursday evening for the counties of La Port, St. Joseph, Elkhart, Berrien, Cass (Michigan) and St. Joseph (Michigan). Horizon Bank Awards Grant to Lubeznik Center for the Arts

Horizon Bank announced a grant has been awarded to Lubeznik Center for the Arts (LCA) in Michigan City. The grant awarded was for $30,000 to be paid over a three year period. NIPSCO accepting applications for 2022 Environmental Action Grant

NIPSCO is accepting applications for its Environmental Action Grant to support local nonprofit organizations with environmental initiatives, the company has announced. In its seventh year, NIPSCO’s grant provides $60,000 in funding for environmental restoration and education projects throughout the NIPSCO service territory. Last year’s 18 grant recipients included environmental groups, community groups, schools and other nonprofit organizations. Projects included wetland restoration, the Smithsonian water/ways education exhibit, forest school programming support, pollinator protection initiatives, outdoor and environmental education and several projects at the Indiana Dunes, Indiana’s National Park. LaPorte County Health Department: Free COVID- 19 testing and vaccination clinic in Michigan City 

The LaPorte County Health Department announced that a free COVID- 19 testing and vaccination clinic will take place now through Saturday Feb. 19 from 2 p.m. through 6 p.m. daily, in Michigan City at the Salvation Army located at 1201 S. Franklin St. No appointment is necessary. Rapid and PCR tests are available. Town of Chesterton seeking residents’ help in choosing tree planting locations

The Town of Chesterton is currently preparing for the spring 2022 tree planting season and would like residents’ help in choosing planting locations, according to their Facebook page. The Town of Chesterton says the Street Department is in the process of applying for a U.S. Forest Service grant to plant up to 35 trees this April. La Porte County Sheriff’s Office: Man arrested for OWI after receiving help from his father

A La Porte man was arrested for OWI early Sunday after receiving help from his father, the La Porte County Sheriff’s Office says. At 2:12 AM, deputies responded to CR 600 West, south of US 20 for a possible crash. A two-vehicle crash scene was located by Sergeant Jeff Wright.
