Indiana Department of Transportation contractor Superior Construction Co Inc will have lane closures on State Road 249 between I-94 and U.S. 12 beginning on or after Monday, April 28. State Road 249 will have alternating lane closures through October for a bridge deck overlay preventative maintenance project over the Little Calumet River. During phase one, the inside left lanes will be closed in each direction. INDOT encourages drivers to allow extra time when driving through this area and follow traffic directions carefully. Motorists should slow down, exercise caution and drive distraction-free through all work zones.

The Town of Chesterton will celebrate Arbor Day on Saturday, April 26, with a number of projects, Park Superintendent Tyler McLead told the Town Council at Monday’s meeting. “It’ll be a busy day for us,” he said. The Town of Chesterton listed the following projects that will be taking place: *Rebuilding Together Duneland—whose work day always coincides with Arbor Day—will undertake projects in both Thomas Centennial Park and Chesterton Park. *The Tree Committee and the Duneland Garden Club will plant a tree at Thomas Centennial Park. *A local Girl Scout group will plant a tree as well, in Coffee Creek

At 12:45 AM Wednesday morning, Deputy Julian Sanchez was in the area of US 20 and CR 600 West. He observed a passenger vehicle with a license plate violation traveling west on US 20. The vehicle merged onto SR 212 and began to travel north. A traffic stop was initiated in the parking lot of a service station located at the intersection of SR 212 and Tryon Road. The driver was identified as 36-year-old Hassan N. MALLEY of Beverly Shores. A database check revealed MALLEY is wanted (Failure to Appear) by authorities in Wisconsin. MALLEY refused to exit the vehicle

Three CHS athletes named to Indiana High School Award Watchlist Congratulations to CHS senior Kieran Barnewall, sophomore Sammi Boster, and junior Rob Czarniecki on being named to the Indiana High School Award Watchlist. This year the live show, honoring Hoosier athletes from around the state, will be held on Sunday, April 27, at Clowe Memorial Hall at Butler University. Barnewall is a standout on the track team; Boster on the gymnastics team; and Czarniecki on the baseball team.

The Michigan City High School Boys football team and coach Cody French will once again volunteer in the community. Pro Football Hall of Famer, Chicago Bear, Pro Wrestler Steve "MONGO" McMichael passed away on Wednesday from complications of ALS, according to The New York Times. He was 67 years old. On April 21, 2025, at approximately 1:07pm, the Laporte County Regional Dispatch Center received a 911 call indicating a person had suffered a gunshot wound to the head, at a residence in the 300 block of Edwards Street. Uniform Patrol Shift I Officers, Cpl. Brian Wright, Ryan Koontz, Kane Fletcher, Cody Washluske and Louis Gallegos responded to the scene as did Laporte County EMS and the Michigan City Fire Department. The initial investigation determined three local juvenile males, ages 15,17 and 17, were at the Edwards Street residence. They were in possession of two handguns that one of the juveniles

Jasper County- Monday afternoon at approximately 1:00 p.m., troopers responded to a vehicle fire on I-65 southbound lanes at the 231 mile-marker. This location is one mile north of the exit to Demotte/Roselawn (exit 230). Preliminary investigation shows that a 2021 Volvo, operated by Swift Transportation, was southbound on I-65 when the driver pulled over due to a mechanical problem with the vehicle.
